Looking in from afar it looks like Sunderland sold their best player in Bellingham and have to be seen re-investing to replace him. If they didn't, I'm sure the fan base would feel let down.

The upper echelons have clearly decided to make Diarra the 'statement' signing by outbidding everyone else by a distance to get this deal done.

In my opinion they've essentially swapped Bellingham for Diarra.

It will be interesting to see how much they go on to spend from here. They have the smallest budget of the 3 promoted teams but the reality is that it's just Bellingham for Diarra swap with their transfer budget still intact.

Its a different signing for Leeds as we have Ampadu, Tanaka and Gruev at the club already. A midfielder isnt really the biggest priority for the first team. It merely adds more depth to the squad. A Rothwell replacement if you like. It makes sense to try and get Diarra cheaper as we have other, more important signings to make at goalkeeper, left back, upfront, left wing and at playmaker.

You reckon? I'm not sure how much you guys or Burnley have to spend if I'm honest, but we've got a lot.

Burnley were in the PL a couple of seasons ago and we were in the season before that so the allowances for financial losses are in Burnleys and to a lesser extent Leeds favour. Add in the parachute payments and it does add up significantly. FWIW I don't agree with the financial restrictions but that's the world we live in nowadays. Leeds made over £120 million in player sales last summer so are in a reasonably strong position.

Burnley are allowed to lose more than Sunderland but they've had to spank their cash on obligations to buy on some of their squad from last season.

I think we'll spend more than Burnley but mainly because the sales of Bellingham and Watson open up so much PSR room, I wouldn't be surprised if you spent more but our side are expecting spending of at least £150m.

Thoughts on Diarra? Looks a very promising player but it's alot of money for him.

you will need to spend a lot more than them. Sunderland were a country mile behind Leeds and Burnley last season and have a huge amount of ground to make up on those two

Think he's the real deal like, not to say he's the finished product yet but there's not many managers id trust more with his development than Regis Le Bris. Compliments our system perfectly as a right sided 8 and he's the sort of player that could go for 60-70 in a couple years time.

I do however think it's a lot of money, although amortization of the fee makes it feel slightly more manageable from a financial standpoint. Not a slight on the Leeds project but I think this move makes more sense for him from a tactical standpoint as he doesn't really fit farkes formation for me (granted he might change that).

In fairness the gap would have been a lot smaller but we just went into recovery mode 6 weeks before the playoffs to be ready. I do think there was still a gap though of course.

We actually performed a lot better against the top sides in the league, especially Burnley who we bested in both legs as RLB's tactical setup favours being the underdog and hitting teams on the break. Think we will suit the premier league a bit more rather than taking 1 point of Plymouth and Watford.

You are correct points wise over the season but we took 4 points off Burnley last season and should've been 6 and we were pretty comfortably the better team in those matches, the same with sheff UTD, We let ourselves down against bottom and middle places teams. Is say yourselves are the only team to have outplayed us

I’d hope so but seeing how far from safety the three promoted teams finished last season I think there’s a very real chance of a repeat this time around

We won't be spending £150m, not without a few sales first. Ipswich spent that amount last season but on the wrong players, even though the squad they have should piss the championship. You are a good team but I thought last season having the young squad showed at times, you've got what seems a decent player but the PL is a totally different ball game, imo you really need to add some experience now.

Bulka should be a decent addition after diarra, seems to have agreed personal terms this morning.

Ipswich spent 150m on ****e with no sales, hopefully the promoted teams are a bit smarter this time round.

The gap between Sunderland and Burnley looked big points wise but as I’ve said countless times, Burnley’s combination of great goalkeeping and good fortune meant they had way more points than they deserved.

I hope Sunderland make a fist of it (as long as they finish below us) proper club, and trying to play attractive football.

Interesting read. No idea how good Diarra is but I think it’s slightly wrong to say he chose Sunderland over us as we never had a bid accepted by his club, which I find a bit frustrating to say the least, if he really was our top target (just pay the money). It does show the level we’re operating at where you spend £30 million on a punt. Hoping we can buck the trend of the past two seasons and stay up. If we can then I wish Sunderland well.

Suppose nobody will ever truly know, but Ed is usually a decent source for context.

Okay,, fair enough. Not seen it reported that we submitted a further bid. Fabrizio Ramano said we were considering it.

Aye was probably late last night when this all happened, our French core probably helps to convince players like this as there's I think 8/9 French at the club now.

You need to get on the Americans and Germans soon.
