It’s not about “Bashing Baz”, the stats plainly show he was the least effective goalkeeper not only in the championship, not only in England but Europe too Stats don’t lie I’m afraid and his time on loan last season didn’t go any better
I can't remember which Forum's Supporters it was but last time in the Championship they posted something like 'We have to take advantage when we score, Southampton are a good side, but we will score because their goalie (Bazuna) is the worst goalie I have ever seen in professional football' or something like that. So it's not just Saints fans. He really is not very good.
I feel that other issues were in play as well, a misfiring midfield that put pressure on the defence along with Martins insistence on playing out from the back. Not all Baz’s fault.
I don't need stats to know that he is not very good at shot stopping I can see it, but they certainly back it up. He may improve with age but it really is the most basic requirement of a GK to stop shots and we don't have time to wait.
Yeah for me it's never been about the stats. Just the amount of times we've conceded a goal and I've thought 'he should have saved that'. His starting position is all wrong and he seemingly has weak wrists. Two massive flaws for a keeper.
But was his position wrong because of the suicide ball in front of him? Did he concede more as he faced more shots from a good position than anyone else? Not saying it is true, but worth putting out there.
We didn't play suicide ball in 22/23 though? Plenty of our conceded goals in the championship weren't from losing it in defensive positions also. I honestly think he's just a very poor shot stopper and it's as simple as that.
This 100%. I used to play in goal for 30 years, obviously not at the same standard, and losing was a habit, but the position is still the same, and I noticed in so many games and highlights. I used to say 'Why is he stood there?' and they were not all from Russ-Ball or even if it was bad play in front of him that had no effect on his starting position. It's like he's never been coached or something.
I feel like the ‘Is Baz an awful GK or just young and developing?’ debate is the new ‘Should we have sacked Puel or not?’.
A good or a carp keeper depends on the defense in front of them. All of our our keepers would be gods if all they only had to do is practice goal kicks. Saints seem to love giving the ball away right infront of goal giving the goalie zero chance! Gordon Banks would be a totally ship goalkeeper with the amount of chances our opponents are given
To put it a different way, instead of focusing on shots he conceded he possibly shouldn't have, how many games did you walk away from thinking he'd won us points? Or made a great save even? I can recall one save where I thought '****ing hell that was a good save' - wba away. Genuinely struggling after that. Arguably I saw Alan Blayney make more great saves in one match than Baz in two years.
So one per season so far. Any more? Genuinely interested to see how many people can remember as there's a chance I've missed some (didn't watch that game for example).
There was one game in the Championship (Norwich away?) that he had an absolute blinder and the only reason we were 1-0 up for so long, then he let in a soft goal. In that game he still got us a point as he had a blinder. Yep, but you are right, that is about it.
