I 100% agree with the sentiment .... but, I'd say it's pretty obvious what's going to happen. I hope I'm wrong.
Me too,and the same as you in that I agree with T.W. Crumbling, derelict buildings in City Centres make for an appalling look and give off the wrong impression to visitors...Glasgow is also becoming a City Centre of derelict buildings, some of which are architectural masterpieces, but there needs to be some meaningful discussion as to the character and calibre of the occupants being lined up... One wrong move and you're shutting shops due to a marked drop in footfall...
Talking of councils... There's a beautiful old school across from Glasgow Royal Infirmary(Martyrs Public School in Townhead).Big red sandstone building built in the early 1900's and is one of the earlier works by renowned architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh..I always comment, when I pass it,how beautiful a building it is and how it's in fabulous condition for it's age... I read not long back that it was to be sold by the council and interested bidders were asked to tender their bids, anyhow,I read last week that the Council had had several bids but had decided to accept a bid of £250,000 from the Bishops Conference of Scotland, who wish to turn it into a Scottish Catholic Public Museum... The building is large and immensely beautiful, the mind ****ing boggles as to the rationale behind this 'give away' from a cash strapped Council...
No No,they prefer Churches nowadays...Another bugbear of mine. There's an old church on Sandgate,Ayr(The West Kirk) which is a Wetherspoons now,****ing sacrilege,it's still got the pulpit as you climb the stairs to the toilet
They've missed a trick there, the font should be a urinal. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Glasgow has some great well built well designed old stunning and opulent buildings that reflect the City’s size but like here and many of the merchant or industrial cities these buildings are so expensive to change or maintain . Personally if I won the Euro lottery I’d buy up plenty in the city centre here and renovate them to al least look presentable , but then I’d have money to burn .
How nice of them to ask you to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony, I reckon green will suit you. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
I once booked flights out of Humberside to Cyprus with the wife and it was cancelled so they bussed us all the way to Hull to stay in the Portland overnight in preperation for a flight the next day. It was disgusting, we could not even atempt to eat the food and we went out and ate in Hull and got leathered enough to be able to sleep in the bed. Woke up the next day to be told the flight was going to be delayed a further 24 hours. We returned to our room, sat on the bed and started to plan an all day session in town to get drunk again. It was only after about 20 minutes my wife asked me 'Why exactly are we even staying here, we live in fu**ing Hedon'. It is still a head scratcher for me to this day why neither of us even thought about getting a cab home. I think we were kind of swept along in the holiday mode and being moved around like cattle with other people we just went along with it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that, even though it has no relevance to the story you shared a link to.
It used to be a very posh hotel, though that was obviously a very long time ago now, the first floor restaurant was particularly posh.
I may be wrong but seem to remember it was Hull's only 5 star hotel at one point. I have eaten there and it was very good. Seemed to go downhill rapidly, finally becoming a cannabis factory! I believe they couldn't track down the owner of the building who lived abroad.
As you like your architecture, I am currently in Prague, and I guess you may have been. Sat on the balcony of an apartment in a building that looks like a Palace just like every other building in the centre of Prague. ****ing stunning place.
When it was Centre Hotel in the 70’s it was fine and Centre Bar part of the local circuit , was decent then although I was invited to a scrap with a local hard man one Sunday , think he was bored .
It was Hull's only four star hotel. I think the owner went bankrupt, I seem to remember he owned quite a few properties that were seized by banks.
I always started in Star of the West straight after City. Cant remember, did it open earlier than the other pubs on the night?
