Should we assume that the striker is Downs and the midfielder is Zeneli? Both profiles fit with the sort of transfers you'd expect of Saints Downs: 21 years old, just won his first international cap for USA. 6ft4in striker, playing in Germany - where Spors is from - and is good in the air and has a bit of pace, been playing pressing football in 2. Bundesliga Zeneli: 22 years old, just won his first two caps for Sweden. 6ft1in central midfielder, playing for Elfsborg. Has four goals and 11 assists to his name
Saying you are working on a striker you want 'no matter what' is probably music to the ears of the selling team unless there's a release clause
Would personally be very underwhelmed if the incoming striker is Downs. Fine if it's a 'one for the future' type of signing, but not as first choice.
Why? He's just won his first international cap, he's got all the attributes Still wants in a striker and can clearly finish well.
I think of we keep hold of Armstrong, Archer and Stewart then they are as close as we are going to get in terms of guaranteed championship goals so I'd be fine with someone the scouts see as having big potential coming in to support that/mix it up. If Archer leaves then Id expect we'd bring one more in, possibly on loan towards the end of the window.
There are a few rumours floating around about strikers: Downs as mentioned Richard Kone from Wycombe - Saints allegedly one of a number of Champ teams interested William Geubbels - playing in Switzerland, been a few reports we are monitoring him. Highly thought of a few years ago when he was like 16, third highest scorer in the top flight of Switzerland last season. Top was Shaqiri if that gives you any indication of the standard. Allegedly being monitored by a number of top flight teams so doubt we’d be too attractive to him when he has a pretty low release clause of £8m. I agree that Downs feels the most likely of those with the big German links we have now, depending on outs we should be alright at striker I think if it’s just Onuachu who goes. Creative midfielder could mean wide player depending on definition of midfielder I suppose.
But also, that's what Armstrong, Archer and Stewart are for, no? All three of them have had double digits seasons in the Championship before. If your strikers are Armstrong, Archer and Downs - with Stewart as the 4th man, to mitigate for his propensity to get injured, I think that's about as good as it gets at this level
Yeah, that's why I said I'm okay with Downs, so long as he isn't coming in as a starter, but rather as 'one for the future'. I'm actually very content with our striking options as they stand. What I don't want though is Downs coming in to replace Archer/Stewart.
After hearing how ambitious Dragan is, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a guy we all say, how did Saints manage to sign him? I am feeling really optimistic of the team Spors is going to put together.
He isn't awful. Martin just didn't know what to do with him (or many of our other players). Wouldn't mind seeing what Still can get out of him.
We should just lock him in a room with you for an hour and he might become the next Le Tiss. On the other hand he might just become a nervous wreck.
