I’d agree with you. There are a few out of contract players we could target who would be an upgrade on Moore but would be fairly inexpensive. Angus Gunn has been mentioned although he was poor for Norwich last season. There is also Matt Ryan who has played in the Premier League with Brighton previously. I can’t say I’ve seen him recently but he played 14 times for Lens last season and has been at Roma, FC Copenhagen so has been playing at a decent level and been a number 2. There is also Freddie Woodman but I’m sure I read he was signed for Man Utd as their 3rd choice.
I'm really puzzled with Moore tbh, was in the PFA team of the year when he was promoted with Sheff Utd. I think he's a decent keeper but he's barely played for a 35 year old. I was hoping he'd get more games so we could see what he's really like.
Think Oviedo will prosper. Good stadium, some of richest men in world behind them. I think they get up, stay up, and are a European contender in 2-3 years.
Yeah had a good year, granted league one GKOTS has consistently shown it doesnt mean much. Hell portsmouth released theirs after he got it.
As the window reopens tomorrow I think we will see deals starting to be made and finalised Players (some) back towards the end of next week too
We risk relegation more by spending that wage on an expensive reserve keeper we don’t use instead of than using it on an outfield player that we will IMO. In reality it’s not a zero sum game, but unless your reserve keeper plays a significant amount of games, it becomes money the club is spending that isn’t helping you on the pitch.
Completely understand what you’re saying but disagree. You absolutely need a sub keeper that’s capable of playing those significant games in case it’s needed. You won’t know if it’s needed until it’s too late. So expending wages on a good sub keeper is essentially an insurance policy. You might not need it but if you do you’re fine.
I don't believe the club is in such a difficult financial bind that they can't afford to strengthen both. I'm not suggesting we spend a fortune on a reserve goalkeeper, but I think we could find one at such a price that wouldn't affect our outfield business activity.
Even just to give patto a rest in the cups. Can easily sign a second choice keeper for a few million quid, when split over contract length it wouldnt make a dent at all.
We aren’t ****ing peasants here. This is a well run club with growing commercial deals and appeal. Let’s see what the new sponsors deal alone comes in at for the year. I’ll confidently predict it’s far more than a decent back up keeper will cost us. 39k season tickets is north of £15million as well.
Armando Broja as a loan or even perm from Chelsea? Struggled with injuries but on his game could be brilliant and offers something different to Isidor and Mayenda A third striker possibly the one position we can take a risk on a player who’s had injuries as Wilson and Mayenda are pretty robust and ready to step up
Re the sub keeper...what about Blondy? Is he no good? We've never seen him play first team games so he's still an unknown to me. There must be some folk on here who go to reserve games. What's he like? He was signed by our scouting network which we're all, generally, over the moon with.
I don’t think many would share my view tbf. I just see any money we spend that doesn’t get onto the pitch as largely being wasted - or at least money that could have been better used elsewhere - unless it’s investment for the future. And on your point about sub keepers who are capable of playing significant games, I’d argue that at least half of the current pl don’t have that. Add in that significant keeper unavailability tends to be pretty unlikely (8 teams had keepers play 36+ last season) and I’d argue it’s an acceptable gamble to allow us to concentrate elsewhere - even if I’m sure the club would disagree! Personally I’d be okay with Moore getting a game or two in an emergency plus all the cup games. However there are plenty of free agent keepers who’d give the veneer of safety that I’d be fine with us signing too. I certainly don’t want us to bring in a ‘co no1’ though. Complete waste of time and resources imo. If we don’t like Patto, then we replace him. Keeper competition isn’t really a thing for anyone other than indecisive clubs.
Think he was signed specifically to be third keeper at championship level so would be very surprised if he’s now good enough to be reserve keeper in the premier league
While that is obviously true, pushing that money into a slightly better right back will have a bigger impact on our season almost every time.
Good for them too. ****e how they got shafted with the SAD ruling in Spain and ended up down the leagues, those fans have suffered. Prefer Sporting mind, incredibly passionate fans from a historical mining area. They wear red and white too!
Every premier league club has a second keeper better than Simon Moore. And not even close. We need to sign a better back up keeper. It’s not going to cost tonnes of money or wages so your fear of wasted money isn’t really going to play out. And we’ll be very glad of it if Patto does his cruciate in September.
