Only based on my complete lack of knowledge about him I’d rather go with Pope or Cooper. How does Petrovic compare with them rather than our current two?
He helped get us promoted, we gave him some hatred in the PL he owes us nothing and I’m relieved we’re not having a chance to get sentimental and go with him again
Edited table to include Robert Sanchez of Chelsea, given LOL's comments asking why Petrovic was behind Sanchez for Chelsea The above data is just based on performances from last season (2024/25) So based on the above alone, Petrovic, Trafford, Cooper and Johansson and Sanchez, all made a positive contribution to keeping the number of goals their team conceded to lower than expected. The others either performed as expected or were worse than expected. Petrovic, Trafford, Sanchez and Cooper all had a higher percentage of shots saved than Meslier, everyone else was either equal or slightly worse than Meslier. Sanchez, Darlow, Pope and Cooper were all better than Meslier at stopping crosses, whilst Trafford and Johansson were significantly worse. On a simplistic ranking system, just on the basis of the 3 main stats of Goals prevented, % of shots saved and % of crosses stopped, then the 3 best keepers in the list above all scored 10 points and are Sanchez, Trafford and Cooper. Meslier ranked last with 18 points, 1 point ahead of Johansson on 17. Petrovic scored 12 points, whilst both Pope and Darlow scored 15 points Following table shows how goals were scored against the relevant keepers
Tanganga from Millwall has a £1.2 million release clause. Instant upgrade on Wober and dirt cheap. I like this deal alot.
good stuff Aski. the keeper stat I look at is post shot expected goals - PSXG - it’s basically xg for keepers but looks at the actual shots on target faced and works out the likelihood of them resulting in a goal. Accounting for keeper position, trajectory of shot etc.- still just an algorithm so it can’t tell you if the striker miskicked it etc but it’s as good a guide as you can get as a benchmark for shot stopping Petrovic ranked 6 across the top 5 leagues in Europe last year. +.32 goals per game. Basically saving his team a goal, above expected, every 3 games. ligue 1 keepers did seem to dominate the higher rankings though… maybe the strikers are crap
The column in the table "expected goals conceded" is basically PSxG, I just worded it that way to make it more simpler. the stat you are describing is PSxG-GA which is what the positive/negative goals conceded column refers too, except I base it as an overall total of goals saved/lost over the season due to a keeper, as opposed to showing it as a fraction per game, although both methods show the same thing.
Lots of outlets saying we’ve got Bijol - A couple of weeks ago they said we’d got the Liverpool LB so let’s wait and see
From all the footage I’ve seen and from general thoughts out there he’d be an excellent signing. Not sure what you’ve seen to come to that assumption mate
I think he's just a big slow lump who is good in the air. Cresswell was the same. We sold Cresswell for 5 million and want to spend 15 on this guy. Poor signing imo.
63 International caps, 100 appearances in Serie A and compared to Cresswell !! He has supposedly picked Leeds over Inter and Roma as he wants to play in the PL He started his career as a DM so should be good on the ball too
i wasn't implying any criticism, more attempting to add to the discussion. The difference between xg against and psxg is basically own goals which are included on xg but not in PSXG... i prefer the per 90 as a gauge as it takes out number of games played from making the absolute numbers looking skewed, I also think Darlow just hasn't played enough games for the stats to be meaningful. I believe some of the advanced PSXG models now look at how hard the shot was the struck etc, to try and add depth to the stats but ultimately all this stuff is just a guide. It's just better than save percentage, which is better than goals conceded! There's no way an algorith can say whether the striker has messed up or the keeper has done great. Plenty of keepers fluctuate season to season and over a season. My criticsim of Meslier is constant 'under-performance' over a number of years... the figures, like any, are obviously more valid the greater the volume of data points.
Cresswell was a big lump but who was also prone to rushes of blood. Just a kid so they may go away. I prefer my central defenders to have recovery pace, particularly with our style of play, but i'll reserve judgement on Bijol... presuming he signs... until i've seen him.
