Now that City are out and Liverpool never being in it I'll root for the English teams still left in the competition. If they go all the way to the final though that might change...
Actually thinking about it i'd prefer Chelsea to Arsenal as well. They've regained their over-inflated opinion of their club in the last few weeks. To point that now its us in decline (The reigning champions, second in the league) and their fantastic (5th, still recovering from **** start, Won **** all in 7 years).
I don't mind Arsenal, atleast there a proper football club, that have earnt the success they've had over the years, like ourselves and Liverpool. Hate Chelsea they've just bought the success theyve had, much like City are doing now, and I'd hate to see the European Cup bought. Not that I see either of the English sides going all the way, anyways, the 2 Spanish giants look untouchable
The Champions League is dead to me. Well 'til next season (hopefully). I will be supporting Utd in Europe's Carling Cup, and not any other team. Maybe the team playing City. Long live the Europa League.
I wouldn't begrudge either club winning the champions league, in fact I'd be happy if they did, especially for Wenger. I certainly won't be cheering either though, I couldn't really care less. I'd rather watch them than us on 5 mind.
More than one season of poor performances, coupled with better performances by Italian, French or Russian clubs. The top three UEFA coefficients get 4 CL spots, and right now that's England, Spain and Germany. That top three is unlikely to change this season, given that only two German, Spanish, Russian and French clubs got out the group stage and whilst Italy got three out, Udinese went out in qualifying. Also, points are averaged out over all clubs for any given season, so England will benefit from the fact that all our clubs are still in Europe (although Spuds and Brum probably only for one more game), whilst France, Italy and Russia will be heavily penalised for the poor performances of Udinese, Rennes, Roma, Spartak, Vladikavkaz etc. In fact, unless one of those countries' clubs go on and win one of the respective competitions, England will probably get even more points than them this season. P.S. To answer the original question, I'll be supporting both the English clubs, but in a very passive, BBC-live-text-whilst-watching-something-else kind of way. I'd quite like Chelsea to win it actually, as then Abramovich will have achieved his goal and it will be interesting to see how quickly he gets bored in the aftermath. But then again I'd also quite like both clubs to be beaten and utterly humiliated. Ideally by Basle
Interesting from the point of view of a Chelsea fan than so many United fans hate Arsenal more, who have earned their success certainly more than Chelsea. Why is this?
Seems to me like it's a pretty 50:50 split between the two clubs. Some of us hate Chelsea more cos of the external funding, some of us hate Arsenal more cos their fans are generally much more bitter. Even a Chelsea fan like yourself, who can be a bit of a wum and a cock at times (nothing personal ) is still much more preferable to some of the whiny bitter Arsenal fans who are convinced that some sort of referee / FA / alien conspiracy is the only reason they haven't won anything for six years. Even the fact that Arsenal earned their success more than Chelsea isn't really a positive point for le Arse, cos so many of their fans can't shut up about just that!
I won't be cheering on Arsenal, but I am sooooo glad they are still in the CL. They have absolutely no chance of winning it, but will now commit huge amounts of their limited resources to staying in it as long as they can, and that will weaken them in the EPL The North London Power-Shift will soon be complete.
I see the CL as La Liga vs the prem and slways want English clubs to go as far as possible apart from winning it! So embarrassing that the two teams topping our league didn't make it through to the next round, hoping Chelsea and Arsenal go far and make sure that premiership clubs are still a dominant force in Europe.
I agree. And even if it did, the fact is that the PL has such strength in depth in its European qualifiers that the average ranking will stay high even if the top clubs fail. Spain may have Barca and Real storming away at the top, but they also always have clubs like Sevilla and Villareal failing miserably at the first hurdle and getting nul points to drag the average down. Our worst possible performers in Europe this season will be Spurs and Brum if they lose their last EL matches, and even they will get a minimum eight points apiece from three wins and two draws.
I will be cheering on real madrid now that united are out, I would like to see a madrid v bayern final
Why would I cheer on 2 teams mostly based on foreign players, they do not have much representation of england. Plus London is almost in ****ing france anyway
i miss arsenal being a 'powerful force' in the premier league. Alrhough i like the 'no team from london has ever won the champo league' i have a soft spot for l'arse and want them to do well. i do want madrid to win it though, just for my man crush on mourinho and ronaldo and my hate for barca
Cheers for the kind words lads but we don't really need support from any Channel 5 clubs thank you very much
