I think the risk here is people are conflating two different seasons. We came 7th with one of the largest wage bills of non-parachute clubs. We currently have no visibility of what our wage bill was last season, but with Traore, Tufan, Seri, Philogene and others off the wage bill, I can't imagine that youngsters like Kamara, Zambrano, Hughes, etc. would be anywhere close to the same level of wages.

I don't necessarily disagree with much of what this analyst has said, but my skepticism at the analysis always perks up when I see people falling into this trap.

His point about PSR amortising the purchases over 5 years was precisely the point I made the other week when everyone was saying we were right on the edge and continuing to lose 500k a week when I was pointing out that was very likely not the case this season and in fact we would be in a much stronger position than last season despite Baz et al. constantly carrying on about this mystical 500k a week we supposedly lost at some point.

The analyst also seems to think we have PSR room this summer which I disagree with as the KLP sale summer is now dropping off which means we need to have another relatively frugal year like last year (where we offset our purchases with sales), before pushing the boat out again next year (assuming we can make a few reasonable sales to fund it).

Just on the wage bill, as you rightly say we have no way of knowing for sure yet, but I don't think it'll have been significantly lower this season gone than the one prior. The squad was much bigger, we paid a load of players to not be here in addition to that and it has been said that we're still paying well. İt's known for example that Portsmouth couldn't afford to match what we were offering to pay Kamara.

Yeah I think we need to wait and see. I think tufan and Seri would have been on a lot, traore too.

Hope that link works - its a nice compilation of City's accounts over previous 10 yrs put together by expert Kieran Maquire. Its a useful reference point

So as I understand it … the new PSR rules permit losses of £41.5m over three year period (up from £39m) They haven’t implemented the squad cost ratio element which would limit wages to 85% of revenue. Hopefully that’s right.

The figures we need to look at on Maquire’s spreadsheet are the EBIT??? I’m going for that as those are the figures that he reports as underlying loss and match the % increase since previous years. But I’m not 100% sure why those are the figures and not say profit before tax or cleaned net profit – perhaps someone can clarify? And I don’t know why that cleaned net profit is so much worse than profit after tax? Trying cleaned net profit gives similar outcomes.

The headline figures (not in spreadsheet) also mention £30m post-season player sales which are obviously Greaves and Philo. As we paid £5m for Philo then that’s £25m transfer profit?

If we just look at yrs 21/22 – 23/24 as the rolling 3 year period then (using EBIT) the losses are ~ £55m which are outside the PSR rules. So the £30m sales must count in that period despite not being a formal part of the accounts otherwise we’d have been subject to some sanction?

If we can have a reasonable guess at this year then it gives us some scope for working out how much financial lee-way there is. So being optimistic and assuming revenue is the same and that we have trimmed wages (go back to previous yr). Then we’d be looking at a loss of around £20m again although the player sales would go into this figure and so I think 24/25 accounts will reveal a profit overall. So excluding other elements that gives a rolling loss of £37m for the last 3 yrs.

Thinking ahead for next season and the 22/23 season accounts (-£20,4m) will drop out then that will allow for a £25m loss next season. That doesn’t feel like a lot of leg room given recent accounts.

Probably dozens of errors in those paragraphs, but hopefully a starting point that can be corrected? But it doesn’t feel like we have a lot of scope for heavy investment this summer.

You have to factor what new signings are on too though. Ömür and Giles are reportedly on north of £30,000 a week. Kamara, Alzate, Mehlem, Palmer, Pedro, Millar, Belloumi, Drameh etc. won’t be on peanuts either. Wouldn’t be surprised if the wage bill was similar to last season or even more.

Sure but Omur and Giles were part of our last wage bill too although granted they were only there for half a season. We also put a lot out on loan this season. It could well be that the wage bill is similar and I'll be very curious but I don't think you can say it's definitively at the same level.

Well you don't need to be a finance expert to understand we are short on cash, there are signs of it everywhere, enormous loan to club owner in short period, payment issues due to transfer delays between countries.

But it is good to know that we have breathing room on PSR, Acun will definetely use it in mid-year.

Why is it PSR not FFP now? Is it the same thing? :emoticon-0138-think

I'd change it to LOB but whatever.

Think they changed it to Profit and Sustainability Rules rather than Financial Fair Play because the implication was it was meant to be 'fair' was wrong lol.

They had an awful season, they will let most of foreigners go and rebuild. May be even Tufan and Yokuslu can leave.
