National League side Southend United beat Forest Green Rovers in the semi-final to play Oldham at Wembley for a place in League Two . Why do you ask? Did anything else happen?
Yep. Your rivals conquered Europe. You did have another season of threatening to challenge for trophies, though. That’s all you’ll ever do under Arteta.
Conquered Europe is a bit of a stretch. They won a competition we were too good to qualify for. PSG/Inter will have been the ones to have conquered Europe depending on who wins that final. Fair play, Spurs won and we will see the 4th worst team in the league this season play in the Champions League next season. And I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me to see them end that 17-year trophy drought, while we go 5 years with no trophies. But I was feeling far worse when they played Liverpool in 2019 - so, as long as that situation never happens again, I can withhold anything football throws at me. We won 5 trophies in the time Spurs were on that 17-year drought by the way .
For amusement purposes, and because spurs winning something drove me to find some way to tarnish their trophy in my head… I got AI to work out the relative strength of the Europa leagues over the last few years by averaging out the uefa club coefficients of (a) the teams that made the last 16, and (b) the teams that the winners had to play to get through and win it. Both of those averages are significantly lower this year than in any previous Europa league, by quite some way. I only did it as a joke and to get out of doing some marking. But it’s actually objectively true that UEFA have made this trophy significantly worse with their changes to the CL, yet kept the prize the same. Wonder how long they’ll keep it like this. I bet the CL playoff losers will be back in it before too long. The top dogs at UEFA can’t have watched the Europa league this year, and that final in particular, and think it’s working in the current state. They must have done those sums too surely.
Was the worst final I can remember. The quality of the Europa was always mediocre at best but now with the expanded UCL - Its a nothing trophy. .. and the conference League is just laughable at this point.
Spurs winning a major European trophy has gone down as expected. Get rid of Arteta and you could win it one day, perhaps.
Dunno. You’ve got more posts on here from rivals trying to bait Arsenal fans into caring enough to respond than you’ve actually got Arsenal fans responding.
Oh brother, honestly, I think it does go under the radar just how embarrassing this result and performance was. We fielded a full strength XI against a mediocre Man Utd side, who then went down to 10-men for 60 minutes, and we struggled to break them down, only to then get KO'd on penalties. We even got gifted a penalty in normal time from a Havertz dive and still didn't take advantage . We could have had a good chance of winning the FA Cup this year if we'd gotten through that tie like we were expected to.
We never played in that format. When we were in the Europa League , the champions league teams came into the competition. With the new format , the Europa League is less of a trophy than the Community Shield. Literally had the 16th and 17th ranked teams in England contest the final.
You lost 4-1 to Chelsea in the final in 2019...they weren't in the CL that season The previous season you were knocked out by A Madrid who dropped down from the CL ... they were so ****e that year that they failed to beat Qarabag home or away that season. In 2000 you lost the final to Galatasaray. Both of you dropped out of the CL into the Uefa cup. I won't bring up Nayim from the half way line as that seems unnecessarily cruel
No don't bring up Nayim! If you don't I will not bring up winning the league at your place. The Europa League is undoubtedly weaker now than it was. I think you know that. It's still a trophy and it was much needed for Spurs, of course, so I am not saying you shouldn't be celebrating it. But, honestly, you shouldn't be flexing after finishing 17th in the league. Just celebrate and be happy you actually won something, but wait until you are a competitive team at the top level again before resuming the battle with Arsenal fans.
was great to celebrate watching us winning a trophy at the lane with my daughters...the were 10 and 5 last time round! If we wait another 17 yrs before winning one I'll be 75 ffs
Your new manager is quality. You have finally hired someone who can make a difference after some shocking choices over the years. I think you will be back in contention for top 4 next year.
Top 8 maybe but we ain't catching up with you, Liverpool, city, Newcastle, chelsea, Villa or Brighton this year imho
