i have allways been a fan of micheals driving and in general have stood up for him , but for me his one black mark was 1994 and the illegal driving aids that benettone used on there B194 ,

at the time the paddock knew that benettone and micheal were cheating but nobody actually had a way of proving it , when the FIA did go deeper into it benettone admitted they had traction and launch control systems on the car but never turned them on ------------ yeh ok ,

to a certain extent i can understand why they done it , they were up against the mercurial senna in the newey designed FW16 and knew the only way to beat him was to cheat ,
bennetone were caught red handed with the dodgy fuel filter that speeded up the fuel delivery and the suspect barge board at spa ( think it was spa ) but nobody could actually prove they were turning on the illegal systems during the race meetings ,

as it turned out they need not have bothered as the williams FW16 turned out to be a turkey with major aerodynamic and chassis flaws in its early guise and senna was not around after imola and damon hill was never talented enough to win the WDC in it anyway -

however jos verstappen , micheals team mate at the time has now come out and said what we all knew anyway --

i have allways loved schumachers intelligence and ruthless driving style and will allways have a soft spot for him but i cannot defend him for 1994

------------------------------- shame on you micheal --

He's just confirming what we already knew about 1994.

Even without all that, after the Aus Gp, Hill was WDC in most people's eyes as he forced Schumacher into an error that crippled his car. We all know what Schuey did then.......

For everyone else, make your own minds up

Yeah, but that was for ignoring a black flag at Silverstone.

1994 was a tale of two halves , benettone had the legs , or rather schumachers illegal benettone had the legs on the malfuctioning williams for the first few races until williams and newey made the FW16 competitive ,

schumacher was banned for silly infringements because the fia knew benettone were cheating but could not prove it , hence the bans had the effect of bringing hill into contention with schumacher which was the FIA hidden agenda for the bans in the first place --

Im not going to look but Im sure Schumacher got 75% ish of his available points whilst Hill got 55%? ish. Schumacher would have know but then he'd have to "snitch" on his own team, and what he may have thought as being his only chance at a wdc. It was a dodgy situation in many ways for sure.

in fairness to schumacher bright he was fairly young and hungry for success at the time so probally prefered to keep his mouth shut whilst being swept along in the web of deceit that was created by briatore who we know has a history of cheating within F1 --

schumacher and byrne were party to the sorry episode but i would imagine the one behind it was briatore --

    ???

This is logically flawed for two very obvious reasons, which I will set out below.

It is therefore tempting to consider this thread as a spurious 'bit of fun' on your part, Martial Artist; to incite an argument. For this reason, I will make my point and hope that it is picked up upon by anyone who has any common sense, and leave it at this.

    • You have said Schumacher and Benetton were cheating, yet they still only won by one point after ramming Hill off the track! It must be obvious to you that had Hill not been rammed off the track, he'd have become World Champion in the very year you mention: 1994!

    • According to your own words, one would presume that your assertion that Flavio Briatore and his team were cheating discounts them from being legitimate competition in your own view !!

You are using two logically polarised arguments! Twice!!! ( First with Hill in isolation. Then again with Benneton in isolation!)

I cannot believe this is an accident. It therefore would appear to qualify as a deliberate wind-up.

not really seeing the wider picture are you cc , any WDC is not won or lost on one race a WDC is won over a season not because of a little argy bargy in the final race -

if hill had engaged his brain at adelaide he would have picked off schumacher down the strait with his superiour renault BHP instead of trying it on at a part of the circuit where he knew schumacher would allow him no quarter --

did he really think schumacher was going to move over and wave him thru and offer him an ice cream as he went by ---
i would have thought at his age hill would of been a little more tactically aware than that --

and yes i believe benettone were cheating in 94 as was the point of my topic -

    whats your point ?

    I've made my point.
If you can't see it, read it over and over and over and over and over again.

I highlighted your (lack of) logic, and guessed at its purpose. But I am not the least bit surprised at your response. (Just in case you're hoping, I am not going to repeat it over and over and over and over and over again).

I have no clue if Benetton were using illegal driver aids or not that year. It's something that we'll never know for sure. Could they have? Of course.. did they? Who knows. You'd assume that if they were cheating then they'd cheat with both vehicles though.

It seems like a common theme with Schumacher's ex team mates. They all have a moan about Schumacher being given better equipment, team orders, using illegal devices and what not else, but if they were really as good or better than Schumacher, wouldn't the team have put everything behind them instead of Schuey? I think personally that the common theme is that his teammates just weren't as good as him.

As for '94. Schumacher totally deserved his race bans. He acted like a complete a-hat multiple times on the parade lap at Silverstone and then blatantly ignored a black flag. It'd be like a football player staying on the field after a red card. He showed no respect that day and fully deserved the book to be thrown at him.

You have to also remember that Hill was only in his second season (I don't count '92.. That Brabham was a milk float) and was only promoted to team leader after the tragic events in San Marino. He was driving a car that somebody seemingly indestructible had died in so, not only had to race with that in the back of his mind, he also had the weight of expectation from the team. Yes, if he'd been patient in Australia, then he'd have taken the title, but in his second season and the quite traumatic events of that year, Hill did a fantastic job. I think that claiming he should have been more tactically aware is a bit unfair. The blame for that lies only with Schumacher. It was a disgusting move and something he should be ashamed of.

I didn't read that bit about Hill in Martial's post.

Mods, please delete my posts as I have no interest in being a part of this thread now, the objective of which is very clear and I missed it to start off with.

Looks like his cooling off period didn't work.

Maybe, but you don't expect to be rammed blatantly off the track like that. One of the biggest injustices I have ever seen in F1. Didn't Schuey try and do the same to Villeneuve in '97?

Michael didn't do much wrong. Even if Verstappen's comments are true, surely the critism and anger should be directed at Flavio? To be honest F1 is a competitive sport and if the FIA can't prove you are cheating, why not cheat? It's unethical, but teams will take every advantage they can get.
Oh come on, it was deemed a racing incident and as they were fighitng for the championship, Schumacher was hardly going to make it easy. Hill made a clumsy move out of desperation and he paid for it. Schumacher quite rightly imo became the 1994 Champion.

Yep, and was even more blatant than the '94 move. He had every point stripped from that season as punishment though and suffered quite a backlash from fans around the world. Stupid move.

It's comical the way Hamilton gets ridiculed for his overly agressive tactics yet one of the most blatant shunts ever witnessed in the sport (Schuamacher / Hill) is lauded as a driving incident, even though the authorities deemed otherwise :undecided:

I remember well though, the celebrations across the sporting world when Mr Schumacher's failed 'Hill-esque' attack on Villeneuve backfired on him...Karma was certainly at play that day

This thread is going to end in tears, yes blame Schumacher all you want guys, but you cannot ever doubt the talent he had to go on and be a world beater 6 more times.
How about the Hill shunts (Monza 1995), Senna shunts (89-90)... open your eyes people.
