Question for you while you are here CK. As I understand it all food aid is delivered to the Kerem Shalom Crossing facility is that correct or at least it's one of the UN's main distribution points, once it's been checked by the IDF? Who controls that crossing, do the IDF or UN control it? What I'm getting at is the UN free to do what it wants with that aid, ie when it can go, how much can go and by what means, once the IDF have given it clearance?
As far as I know, from tomorrow a new system is being implemented which aims to circumvent Hamas and the UN entirely. Four huge distribution centers have been constructed, each run by private security groups with US backing/approval. Members of the public will have direct access to these centers and can receive aid from there, without having to go via Hamas or UN-controlled centers. All aid trucks are inspected by the IDF before entering Gaza, usually through Keren Shalom although Rafah and Beit Hanoun are sometimes used too.
Yes mate, you are bang on the nail and told me what I had all ready researched, didn't mean to sound cagey about it, but just wanted to get to the facts...and the reason for this was because the UN had delayed supplies for three days, not Israel or the IDF, the UN delayed it.
I can't say too much about the UN or we'll have Pinkie frothing at the mouth on here in no time. But it is pretty obvious they weren't doing anything to prevent Hamas from having first dibs on all aid. And equally obvious that their presence was largely a needless level of middling bureaucracy which causes delays. Not because they intend to cause those delays, but simply because this is what happens at times of crisis when middling bureaucracy is helplessly out of its depth. cf. the NHS for further examples. EDIT: I'll add, in fairness, that it isn't their fault they are out of their depth. This situation is unprecedented and totally not the one they would have been trained for. Hamas' attack and Israel's response are to blame for the situation.
One of the problems I was having trying to research stuff on the internet was getting away from stories by the BBC....for some reason the algorithms kept feeding me them. Eventually I rehashed some of my wording and eventually managed to lose them (the BBC). It's become pretty obvious to me that BBC Verify are feeding certain narritives, because when you actual challenged stuff, you find an array of additional information. As I understand it the UN claimed the delay was because it wasn't safe to go in - which is fine, but it's a world away from saying that Israel are not delivering the food, it's in the holding facility waiting for the UN to decide when to go. Yet somewhat amazing that the IDF, who have everything locked down tight, can't 'protect' UN food convoys and oversee distribution ... but could do exactly that if they were run by the US/ Israel or private companies ... makes you wonder...
I fully agree. I say the same thing to Holocaust revisionists/deniers. Does it make it ok that, according to them, Hitler killed 750,000 instead of 6 million? So it's all ok now? My only point is that it is maddeningly unhelpful that the goalposts keep shifting. The aim is clearly to raise public awareness at best, whip up hysteria at worst, but there is a tried and tested theory called 'shock fatigue' that says the average person just gets fed up of being told to be alarmed in a hundred different ways. 'Remain' learned this the hard way during the Brexit vote. Either pick one narrative and stick to it, or change the narrative as often as you want - but provide empirical data when you do so, not numbers plucked out of some nameless charity worker's backside.
The IDF doesn't want to oversee distribution. Why would they? They are already understaffed and stretched thin on the ground, and having lots of IDF soldiers confined permanently to a very small, very crowded and potentially chaotic place strikes me as a suicidal strategy.
Israel could cut through all of that by allowing the World's press access and overseeing the aid convoys and distribution ... would actually be great for Israeli PR ... and ain't like what remains of Hamas will pop their heads up to try and disrupt ...
Why was Netanyahu so keen on doing it for non-UN aid then? ... exactly the same 'problems' you've identified... and I suspect Gazans would toe the line if queues were through heavily armed IDF...
Yes that sounds sensible. Give the IDF even more people to secure the movement and safety of in a war zone. That'll solve the problem of stretching them too thin.
