Good Morning. It's Thursday 22nd May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Real Betis Revive Interest in Mateo Joseph

La Liga outfit Real Betis are reportedly preparing a fresh bid for Spanish U21 striker Mateo Joseph. The Seville-based club previously explored the possibility of signing Joseph with a late bid in the January transfer window, but without a replacement lined up, 49ers Enterprises knocked back their advances.

Mundo Deportivo claim Betis plan to initiate new discussions with Leeds following the conclusion of their season, which culminates with the UEFA Europa Conference League final against Chelsea. Joseph, 21, joined Leeds from Espanyol in 2022 and has since accumulated over 70 senior appearances.

This season saw Joseph contribute three goals and three assists in 39 Championship appearances as Daniel Farke guided Leeds back to the Premier League. He is currently contracted to Elland Road until 2028, suggesting that Betis will face a challenging negotiation process.

The Whites rejected a £10 million bid from Betis for Joseph late on in the January transfer window. At the time, Piroe (and a crocked Bamford) were Leeds only other choices up front, so the club had little choice but to reject their advances. If Leeds were able to secure £15m and a 25% sell on clause, the club may find the offer too good to turn down.

How much do Leeds need to generate in player sales this Summer

Leeds financial situation will play a crucial role in any potential transfer. With Financial Fair Play regulations potentially limiting their summer spending to around £120 million, the club may need to generate revenue through player sales. Mateo Joseph, along with other players like Jack Harrison, Max Wober, Ilea Gruev, and Illan Meslier, could be considered for sale to balance the books.

Leeds United will hope that transfers can be agreed with these five players, potentially raising at least £50m. This financial pressure could potentially make Leeds more receptive to Betis's renewed interest in Mateo Joseph. Rumours suggest that Pascal Struijk could be off to Spurs this Summer, with a speculative fee of between £20m - £25m being banded about. It could mean money left over if 49ers Enterprises can secure Manor Solomon's services on a permanent basis.

I think if we can get 15m plus 25% sell on that’s an offer we can’t really refuse. Would be good to have a buy back option too. In an ideal world I’d send him to La Liga on loan as I think he could do well and be some striker but maybe we strike whilst the iron is hot as he could just end up another Greenwood/Gelhardt. Would be a shame but sometimes the timing doesn’t work.

I’d like to keep hold of Gruev tbh. He’s been very good this year and could be a useful squad option. With Rothwell and Goulivougi already gone we need to replace both. Potentially Longstaff or Sara will replace Rothwell at 10-20m but I feel Gruev could be our Goulivougi replacement. Get rid of Gruev then we need another 10-20m CDM. Think we’d get 10 for Harrison, 10 for Meslier and 5 for Wober. Possible another 5 (combined) for Gelhardt and Greenwood. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see one of Gnoto or Ramazani go if we sign Solomon as realistically all are better left wingers so maybe sell one and buy a right winger to compete with James. We’ve also already got 8-10 in for Kristensen I think?

Well if we sold Struijk and Wober that would mean we need 3 CBs which isn’t ideal so we’ve got to keep one at least you’d expect.

It’ll be interesting to see how many of the players, we as supporters feel should move on, do and for how much. As I see it, all within the squad will shortly revert (or move to, in the case of Rodon/Tanaka/Piroe Ramrazani and Bogle) to PL salaries.

So any players are unlikely to move on unless they get parity, or see a massive uplift in career path. So unless a PL club come calling I don’t see us getting rid of some of the players regularly mentioned, and if we do doubt we’ll get anywhere near the £50m being talked about.

Id keep Wober and Struijk, unless a healthy fee was incoming.

Think Greenwood/Gelhart Mes and Harrison have to move on. Reckon we’d be lucky to get £25m for those 4. Obviously we’ve offloaded the Dane, so got some cash for him.

Like the idea of Joseph on loan to Betis if we get a chunky upfront fee, but I think there’s a player there, who may do extremely well in La Liga. He might be worth keeping but he’s not PL ready based on last season’s performances.

Good morning all. A difficult one with Joseph. You would like to think that after the length of time he’s been at the club and now having cut his teeth in championship our coaching staff would know whether he has the potential to develop into a premier league footballer, that must surely influence any decision to sell or loan? Let’s face it, £15 million isn’t a lot these days to spend on a forward particularly for the division we’re in so any replacement would still be a punt and we can’t afford to get many of those wrong. That said if he can’t step up next year then we can’t afford to occupy a squad place.

    Morning all

Because teams can use amortisation for player purchases it makes available funds very complex.

If Joseph has to start or play a PL game it means we have a serious problem, he isn’t good enough for the Championship. £10m and a sell on is good enough for me

We spent 18m on agents fees, or something like that, according to last set of accounts. You can bet it'll cost some whack to get an agent to find a club for Bamford and Harrison and probably a couple of million out of each of the others fees. People regards it as all profit, Its far from it. There's also sell on clauses to take into account but that wouldn't be a whole lot in those cases

The buying club pay the agent fees, for us, it would be better the other way around as I can't see us raising much from sales and it sounds like we are ready to spend quite a bit

Simple for me if u were on the bench for us in the championship what chance you got of playing 1st team in the Prem. Object of transfers are to improve the squad.
so all the bench go or atleast 90%.
Then some of the original 1st team then go to the bench as a knock on effect. improvimg the 11 and squad as a whole. Brutal tactics are needed if we really want to sucseed.

    Completely agree with this.

    I see it as something like this;

First team starters left / Bench & squad options right
    GK - NEW (Kelleher)/Darlow/Cairns
    RB - Bogle/Schmidt
    CB - NEW (Bijol)/Rodon
    CB - Struijk/Wober
LB - NEW (Tsmikas)/Byram or Firpo
    CM - Ampadu/Gruev
    CM - NEW (Sara)/Tanaka
    RM - NEW (Maeda)/James
    CAM - NEW (Enciso)/Aaronson
    LM - NEW (Solomon)/Gnoto
    ST - NEW (David)/Piroe/Bamford

    Sell
    Meslier (10)
    Gelhardt (3)
    Greenwood (2)
    Harrison (10)
    Ramazani (20)
    Total (45)

    New signings needed
    GK - Kelleher - 25
    CB - Bijol - 20
    LB - Tsmikas - 15
    CM - Sara - 25
    RM - Maeda - 25
    CAM - Enciso - 20
    LM - Solomon - 15
