Of course. Shades of that video of a young Coutinho with Neymar when they were 18 agreeing that it was their dream to play for Real. We know how that ended. :emoticon-0112-wonde

Generally I just lose interest in a player when he leaves the club, I don't wish them well or ill particularly. Though there is a certain satisfaction when they leave for "something better" and end up failing, but that's just because as a Liverpool fan I don't think there is much better - especially when we're in a strong phase.
What happened with Coutinho, Mané, etc doesn't bother me much. Even Owen's trajectory doesn't annoy me particularly - the most offensive thing about him is his mind-numbing punditry.
For some reason, maybe because they're still in the PL, I have a bit of a soft spot for Harry Wilson and Neco Williams, and quite like seeing them do well as long as it's not against us. Perhaps it's because we let them go, rather than them instigating it.

As you allude to here, it's more often than not the destination a player chooses as to whether you retain any interest or have any sentiment around wishing them well in their careers. I would like to think that people don't wish anything other than good in the players lives even if they can't bring themselves to wish them good fortune on their new pitch. We all react differently and as with other things that happen in life, you can't tell someone how they should feel.

Well, the club should be looking to protect the asset; renew contracts when there is less than 2yrs on it, especially if that player is considered a big player. If it doesn't look like they'll sign, try and sell them whilst there is at least a year left on the deal. Of course, if the players refuses to sign AND refuses to leave, the club don't do anything.

So when Liverpool hoover up players from lesser teams as a stepping stone to progress their career that's fine but if they leave Liverpool they are greedy?!

It's the manner in which he is leaving.

Frankly it shows how much improved realtions are as Gerrard got death threats.

Trent merely got a sizable but minority of books.

The world is acting like booing former players is a thing that has never happened before? Every club booed ex players who leave in poor ways - always has happened, always will happen.

this is just that, nothing more nothing less.

It's just something to write about for hacks, and something for bitter rival fans to latch onto to try and console themselves over our title win.
Can't say I approve of booing Trent personally, but obviously some people take these things hard.

    It was not the majority.

I can say that as raheem sterling got 5x the hard time, for years after leaving for a good fee.

Against he is an example of the club seeing where it was going and getting rid.

Obviously the club was not in a good state and bought balotelli after sterling left but my god at least we got a fee off sterling.

Imo fsg played trent well there. He should never ever have come out with a statement now.

It should have been last summer or after the parade. Save everyone the grief (for his own selfish reasons)

It's now clearly dealt with and I hope people shut up against palace. There's no need for it, the point has been made now.

While I don't agree with the booing I get the fans' frustrations.

The Zubimendi comparison is nonsense because he's still allowing Sociedad to cash in on him. Trent could've left 2 years ago if he wanted and we'd have understood it but clearly he's followed Madrid's transfer policy to avoid them having to pay anything.

Yeah, I think a lot of the people writing about this are conveniently forgetting that it isn't the fact that he's leaving that grates, it's because he's engineered it to go on a free and let down the club that he claims to love.
A while back we could have commanded a massive fee for him.

here's the thing thats ignored by the media.

this time last year around march 2024 trent spoke to the 442 and made a statment insulting man city.

“Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.

There have been branding an banners all over anfield saying this means more before he said it.

Trent then said this "It's my dream to captain Liverpool"

then he said this "My No.1 career goal is to win the Ballon d’Or

then he makes a comment about first and second half of career like he was parking anything won and looking to what he can win.

Then he says this “I've said all season, I'm not going to speak on my situation. I'm not going to go into details"

Now, for the average fan they could see what what what.

He's basically ran down his contract while making platitudes and basically lies to some fans and then starts making contradictory comments and everyone knows full well where it is going. He's then tried to string it out and not talk baout it but then drops a bomb after the trophy is won to stink out the last home games.

your average fan can see the lies and when the mind was made upto go. he did not have any intent last summer of staying what so ever but was out making the club look stupid by inulting city by saing the trophies mena more.

Obviously by extension any trophy real madrid win is meaningless then, but they won't be obviously.

I don't think booing a player still in red has any benefit whatsoever to the game being played. I ignore all the usual suspects as they clearly don't understand LFC mentality.

    We booed torres
We booed suarez, he thought he was going to get a nice welcome and was shocked
    We booed Sterling

we got a fee for all of the above. we still booed. Why? cos some fans don't like peopel shafting the club.

We never booed alonso. why? he was told to go by rafa. it was clear. It was idiotic but clear.

Incidentally we have absolutely respected players not of this club many times. Casillas for example got a massive standing ovation when he game with porto.

    We do funny things.

Trent ought to know about the fans and the family of LFC and he ought to have known running his contract down was going to be a serious insult to the fans.

    badly advised throughout.

Gerrard absolutely denied the death threats - gangster malarkey in his biography. And nowadays you get death threats on social media if you merely say who you support on Strictly Come Dancing or I'm A Celebrity, so I'd take that with a pinch of salt.

PS. I'm a bookman as opposed to Kindle, as is evidenced by the clutter in my bedrooms. Trent should count himself lucky. :emoticon-0138-think
