Good job they're fecking off elsewhere for a season..... them and their entitled fans will be back down season after next.....
Six teams going for the title on the final day and all could end up on the same number of points... https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/34575263/national-league-south-title-race-truro-torquay/
Meanwhile Stratford Town’s Easter Monday derby with Alvechurch was abandoned on 77 odd minutes with Town 3-0 up. One of the Alvechurch players broke a leg and his grandfather in the crowd collapsed. Both were taken to hospital and then a few minutes later one of Stratford’s scorers had chest pains and he was also taken to hospital, and the ref decided to call it off. In their wisdom the Committee of the Southern Central League have decided that there was enough time remaining on the clock (13 minutes) for the game to have to be replayed. It’s a meaningless end of season tie, both teams are in mid table and will stay there whatever the result, perhaps moving up or down one place at most. Everyone else has one game left to play.
Torquay - closest club to me and coming a season after administration, a group of new investors along with our friend Colin in the background. Have been getting crowds in excess of those in the National League this season and after a win at Truro last Friday all set up for a corker of Saturday afternoon this weekend coming. C'mon the Gulls!!
It's a shame they don't do the NL South scores on the Saturday afternoon programme, you can imagine the 'as it stands' table would be blowing a fuse...
'It's been challenging': Decision on coach Giancarlo Italiano's Wellington Phoenix future nears Andrew Voerman Apr 21, 2025 • 5:00am (13) Share please log in to view this image Play Video 11:55 ‘Both teams have underperformed’: Phoenix GM on club’s struggles VIDEO CREDIT: CHINO BARRETT-LOVIE A decision on Giancarlo Italiano’s future as the coach of the Wellington Phoenix’s A-League Men team could come as soon as this week. Director of football Shaun Gill said last week one would definitely be made before their last home fixture, against Perth Glory at Sky Stadium on Friday, May 2. A-League Women coach Paul Temple’s departure was confirmed last Thursday, ahead of that team’s final fixture against Western United on Sunday. The Phoenix’s decision not to offer Temple a new contract came after their failure to make the top six was confirmed last Sunday. But even though the Phoenix men have been condemned to the same fate, that doesn’t mean Italiano’s fate will be the same. He led the Phoenix to their best-ever finish at the end of an A-League Men regular season last year, only for them to lose in extra time against Melbourne Victory in the semifinals. Gill said last Thursday that the men’s and women’s coaching situations were “two different beasts, so you have to look at them separately”. please log in to view this image Wellington Phoenix coach Giancarlo Italiano is off contract at the end of the A-League Men season.ANDREW CORNAGA / PHOTOSPORT “It’s not just a case of Paul not making the top six this year. He’s had two seasons and it's felt there's a new voice needed for there. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISE WITH STUFF “Chief still has some credit in the bank after a fantastic season last year and what he did last year.” Before hosting Perth, the Phoenix first travel to play Brisbane Roar this Saturday. The Queenslanders won at home for the first time in 13 months last Thursday, beating Western United. After their campaign ends in two Fridays’ time, the Phoenix are set to have an end-of-season playoff against either Brisbane or Perth in Darwin on May 13 or 14, to determine whether they qualify for the round of 32 in the Australia Cup this year. They went down 3-2 away to Adelaide United on Friday night, suffering their eighth loss in 15 matches since the start of the year and failing to win for the 13th time in that period. The Phoenix won three of their first five matches but have only won three of 19 since losing to their new Kiwi rivals, Auckland FC, for the second time in the space of a month in early December. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISE WITH STUFF Auckland are set to clinch the Premiers’ Plate this weekend after beating Melbourne Victory on Saturday, while the Phoenix’s hunt for their first piece of silverware will stretch on into a 19th season. That Italiano got them closer to a trophy last season than anyone had since Ricki Herbert in 2010 will be a key factor if he does receive a contract extension. He still has the best win percentage (41.82%) of any Phoenix coach. His contract situation has been something of a puzzle all season. An offer of an extension appeared imminent at the end of last season and on the eve of this campaign, Italiano told Stuff: “I'm happy with the offer, but it's just about getting the formalities right and hopefully there will be some news on that sometime soon”. please log in to view this image The Wellington Phoenix have won just five matches in A-League Men this season, down from 15 last season.ANDREW CORNAGA / PHOTOSPORT It has been difficult to get clarity on the timeline of what exactly was offered to Italiano and when, but general manager David Dome confirmed this month that he had recently been asked to make his case for a new deal to the Phoenix’s football committee. Italiano has been bullish on his future, saying after the Phoenix’s third derby defeat to Auckland FC in late February that he envisioned being at the club next season. It is clear he is eager to draw a line under this season and begin anew, with pre-season for the 2025-26 season beginning on July 1. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISE WITH STUFF After the loss to Adelaide on Friday, he said it had been difficult following up a stellar campaign in his first season as a head coach with a poor one in his second, but that he had still been able to find silver linings. “It's been challenging. I'm not going to lie. It's never an easy situation. It's the first time I've ever experienced anything like this. “But my job has always been not only to perform now, but also to develop the young players that are coming through the club and start building for next season. “The one good thing is there are about three or four players there that have come through the academy, that we've been able to fast track and give them an opportunity to consistently perform, and they're going to be better for it next season.” please log in to view this image Play Video 1:47 'The club knows what I can do': Phoenix coach on his future VIDEO CREDIT: CHINO BARRETT-LOVIE The Phoenix have a number of off-contract players whose futures at the club are also up in the air. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISE WITH STUFF Gill said last week that it was “widely known a couple that are off contract are moving on,” believed to be a reference to defenders Sam Sutton and Scott Wootton, who have been linked with moves to Perth. Kosta Barbarouses has said he and the Phoenix both have the option to extend his contract and that appears a no-brainer, given that he is responsible for more than a third of their paltry total of 27 goals this season. Corban Piper said last week there had been no discussions with him about a new contract, while Gill indicated there were “one or two that we’re talking to about returning”. Mid-season loan arrival Chico Geraldes was extremely impressive before suffering a season-ending knee injury, with third-choice goalkeeper Dublin Boon and Stefan Colakovski – who suffered a season-ending injury in December – the others who aren’t contracted for next season. The Phoenix will finish somewhere between ninth and 11th out of 13 teams – their worst finish since they came ninth out of 10 teams in the 2017-18 season. - Stuff Share Add or View Comments (13) PAID PROMOTED CONTENT please log in to view this image Uncover Affordable Campervan Options for Exploring New ZealandVisionery Echo please log in to view this image Pensioners are eligible for hearing aids if they're born in one of these yearshearclear.com please log in to view this image Opportunity Knocks - Cash Price $310,000* 3/111 Coromandel Street, Newtown, Wellington please log in to view this image Christy Kimble please log in to view this image Lifestyle Gem – Endless Possibilities Await 1276 Coast Road, Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt City Andrew Jones please log in to view this image Your Private Oasis in the Heart of Khandallah 93 Jubilee Road, Khandallah, Wellington please log in to view this image Steve Rodwell please log in to view this image Prime Location with Endless Opportunities Rata Road, Raumati Beach, Paraparaumu please log in to view this image Charlie Goodyer please log in to view this image Opportunity in the Heart of Raumati Raumati Road, Raumati Beach, Paraparaumu please log in to view this image Charlie Goodyer please log in to view this image Mortgagee Tender – Mount Victoria 111 Brougham Street, Mt Victoria, Wellington City please log in to view this image Ben Atwill please log in to view this image Earth, Elegance & Beauty | Rammed Earth Sanctuary 197 State Highway 1, Paraparaumu, Wellington please log in to view this image Sharalyn
I used to work with this chap at Reuters back in the day. Nice fella and a raging leftie, I had no idea of his later career..... Who is David Kogan? Football’s new independent regulator with huge issues to solve Might ask him for a job.
Surely all of our futures are nearing. We’re never closer to the future than we are right now. Get the **** out. He’s not fit to lead this great club.
Bwood have really ****ed up. Should have walked this division and a 99.9% chance they end up in the playoffs and more likely than not the additional lottery of not making the top three.
Stoke losing. If results go against them they’ll be two points off the drop with Derby away on the final day. Tasty.
I thought you might have had a quid on them to do the impossible... https://www.oddschecker.com/footbal...ue-south/england-national-league-south/winner
From what I know of him - albeit from a long time ago - I think he'll be excellent, and very fair to everyone.
Looked at the acca for the results required and it was a bit over 300/1. They’ve been woeful most of the season and don’t deserve it. Quite fancy Maidstone to beat whoever they get in the playoffs as they can chill tomorrow with the quick turnaround to the first round midweek.
Phoenix re-sign Giancarlo Italiano as head coach despite poor season 12:24 pm on 24 April 2025 Share this Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share via email Share on Reddit Share on Linked In please log in to view this image RNZ Sport @RNZSport please log in to view this image Phoenix coach Giancarlo Italiano has re-signed for a further year, with an option for a fourth year as head coach. Photo: photosport Despite a disappointing A-League season the Phoenix have re-signed coach Giancarlo Italiano for another year. After qualifying for the play-offs last season the Wellington-based team currently languish in 11th place with two regular season rounds left to play and are well and truly out of playoff contention, while competition newcomers Auckland FC sit at the top of the table. Italiano has been head coach for the past two years and despite only registering six wins this season he still boasts the best winning percentage of any Phoenix head coach. In re-signing Italiano the club's director of football Shaun Gill harked back to his performance last year. "It seems a lot of people in the sporting world have short memories," he said. "I understand the frustration and disappointment with how the men's season has unfolded, but Chief (Italiano) has built up a lot of credit." please log in to view this image Director of Football for the Wellington Phoenix, Shaun Gill. Photo: Photosport "He not only guided the men to within touching distance of the club's first trophy last year, but Chief was also an integral member of the staff during the preceding four seasons when they were finals regulars despite spending the best part of two years in Australia. "We have faith that he will be able to help turn around the team's fortunes next season and have the Phoenix back in the top six challenging for silverware." Italiano is "very happy" to have re-signed with the Phoenix. "We've achieved a lot over the last two years and I'm looking forward to bringing the club back up to where it belongs," Italiano said. "I'm forever indebted to Wellington. The club gave me my first coaching job in the A-League, and I want to leave this club in a good place. "I want to win the A-League. Despite all of the setbacks this season it hasn't been all doom and gloom and I think there's enough there to show that we can definitely move the club forward. "I've learnt how to manage players and their expectations on the back of such a successful season, and how to look after a young group when a lot of pressure has been placed on them unnecessarily...I've learnt how to navigate through so many different issues this year with injuries, player availability and expectation and how you balance all of that."
