On Saturday, Ash brought his lad along to the Leicester game and on Wednesday night, Deano and Matt Duke were both at the Brum game(Hawley, Dewhurst, McEwan and Whittle all work for the club so are always there and Waggy's often there as a guest). I've seen Ben Burgess at Blackburn away(he was also apparently also at Preston away last season) and Justin Whittle was at Derby away this season(maybe not such a big surprise, as he still works for the club), but how many other ex-players you've bumped into at games?
I didn't realise Hawley worked for the Tigers, I seem to remember his family had an antique shop in Beverley, is that still going?
John looks after the match sponsors, he's the one that escorts the sponsors on and off the pitch just before kick off and his day job is still as an antique dealer. He also runs Skills Drills, which goes round schools testing the footballing skills of the kids(you may have seen them at the fan park outside the KC when we were in the Premier League).
Thanks for this OLM, it is that long time since I have seen John Hawley close up, and the few matches a season I get down to see, I probably would not recognise him.
Who's that daft bint who walks over to the centre circle in high heels every week?? Has she not got a brain? I saw Ben Bugress at Preston as well, but it wasn't last season, it was in the promotion season when we lost 3 zip. I used to see John Hawley a lot when I worked in Beverley. Used to see him around where his Dad's antique shop was on my way to the Rose and Crown for my lunchtime pint of Timmy Taylors!!
I know that Waggy and Chillo often attend home games. Have also seen Ken Houghton, Ian Butler, Ian Mckechnie and when possible Andy "Jock" Davidsson. These guys were my boy hood heroes and when the games were played by men not whimps. John Hawley will always be remembered for that goal against Sunderland in a 3-1 win. Top corner from his left peg. He always said his ambition was to hit the Old North stand clock at boothferry park. Alas i dont think John Hawley managed it.
Does Chris Simpkin go to games or is he still in prison? I think he lived in the West Riding. He definately wasn't a wimp!
Seen Pete Skipper at games on more then one occasion. Including at service station on way back from Wemberleeeeee....
indeed he was not a whimp. a real hard man. i think he is still in the clink. shame as Simpkin was another hero. the battle of bramall lane will live long in my memory. now that was a game. if played today u would only have the GK left on the pitch. Even Waggy stuck the boot in In that game. lol.
I havnt seen Ryan Williams at a game but his son is on trial with the centre of excellence hes there most training nights
Must be a look-a-like then haha! There is a guy who sits a few rows above me who is an absolute double of him.
