My husband has checked Season '61/62 and after Sat 23rd of September all 5 matches to Wed the 11th Oct were played away from Hull(1 League Cup game) and from Sat 14th of Oct to 11th of Nov 4 consecutive matches were played at home(1 FA Cup). Also at the end of the season 10 matches were played between Fri 30th March and the last match on 3rd of May. In April 8 matches were played including games played on 2 consecutive days suggesting a catch-up scenario. So Charles we bow to your recollections and were wrong about the 60's outbreak.
I found this on the 61 outbreak Charles: http://www.publichealthjrnl.com/article/S0033-3506(62)80003-1/abstract There are things on the internet about the epidemic including a public warning to vaccinate from Redifusion House, but nothing on how it affected the games. O/T Mrs BMB. I found this while raking around for City memorabilia for the thread: From Hull City Mad Mrs-BMB “Hull City's game above was Lincoln City.BMB too often regales me with trivia about Hull City and somewhere around he has a programme from the first match played in 1905 against Barnsley attended by his Grandad and the first match seen by his dad in 1911 against Leeds. Evidently he and his dad were taken as a bithday present by BMB's Grandad. “ Did your husband ever find those programmes? And if you did is it possible that you could scan anything from them (especially the front covers) and post them on here As mentioned before UnaBomber and I are looking at turning this thread into a blog and a programme image from the first game would take pride of place. Of course the same goes to anyone else who has anything old or interesting they can contribute. This is the oldest programme I’ve found so far from 1934. please log in to view this image [/IMG]
I have a terrible memory now and it’s annoying not to be able to recall early matches. This may be unreliable but I can picture bits from what was most likely my first City match, taken to by my father. It was against Liverpool in the mid 1950’s (54/55?) when I would be maybe about 8 or 9. It was Christmas and because of this it was controversial in our house (Dad and me versus Mum and two Sisters!) so it could have been Christmas eve/boxing day. There was a big crowd and we sat in the West Stand. City lost but I know we scored and it may have been 1 – 2 or 1 -3. It must have been a league match of course for that time of the season and I assume Division 2. I was bowled over by the greenness of the pitch and the two shirt colours etc., also the hustle/bustle of being in a big crowd. The gathering crowd as we neared BP and the push through the turnstiles are deep seated in the memory though. Not much of a memory so, sorry I can’t help much.
Your memory is not bad really as my husband looked at the 1955/56 season for an earlier post and Hull City played Liverpool on Xmas Eve 1955 and lost 2-1 in a Div 2 match. After the match City went to the bottom of the league so not a happy Xmas Day for Tiger fans. He was there too but cannot help you on the attendance.

I was an honarary Swansea supporter for the evening. I got to the KC pretty late and they were shutting the gates. There was loads of space in the North Stand and I got in there. I used my US ID to convince the stewards/plod that I wasn't from Hull. Once in I sat far enough away from the others that they couldn't hear the accent.
2 games in 3 days, and 3 in 4 was common a few years ago. On Easter weekend there would typically be matches on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday. It was often regarded as the make/break for seasons.
Judging by all the matches on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in the old days it must have been a strange Christmas. Imagine everyone sitting down for Christmas dinner then all piling out to watch The Tigers. Not sure whether the sprout effect would be pleasant in a packed stadium.
I the early 60s or 70s Hull City played Crook town, a non league club, and were losing 4.0 at half time but City won the match 5-4. At half time loads of fans left not believing what was happening, in the second half somebody waved a magic wand and city could have scored 10 more goals, the change was unbelievable. I can't remember much else about it.
A sample of City match programmes from 1934 to 2011 (not all years). Can anyone add to this? - Hope this works. please log in to view this image [/IMG] please log in to view this image [/IMG] please log in to view this image [/IMG] please log in to view this image [/IMG] please log in to view this image [/IMG]
I was behind the goal that day, North Stand, and a supporter climbed the barrier and went between the goalposts pushing, Maurice Swan I think the goalkeeper that day, out of the way. Police 'escorted' the supporter away, there were some Crook Town supporters having a field day at our expense, until Ray Henderson (I think) scored our 5th goal.
Here's a couple from my collection, I believe the first and last league matches at Boothferry Park. please log in to view this image
An impressive collection Craig, to think that in those days you didn't need to buy a programme, just pick up the one in the best condition laying on the floor after the match. And wasn't there a programme that was just one sheet of paper because of a strike or something?
We may have been stood next to each other, there wasn't many there as I remember. (I was the tall good looking chap wearing a trilby, you, probably, was the other good looking young fellow)
Not my collection unfortunately C'mon ref. They are just images of programmes that are available to buy from the internet. Nevertheless I think they are interesting when shown together. Thanks for your pics, I haven't seen the Lincoln City one before.
According to my husband Hull City played their last Christmas Day match in 1957 at Boothferry Park. Some matches played at home on Christmas day, which he saw from 1946, from his recollections were late morning kick-offs. Dinner was delayed until he returned to East Hull which suited the family as his dad worked as a pianist in a local working mans club. Also he says that for years Hull City played the same teams home and away over the Christmas holiday period often on consecutive days.
I was at John Hawley's one Christmas and he had that first programme on his desk, my son(who was about eight at the time) picked it up and reading the list the list of players, then turned to John and said 'didn't you play in this game?'.
