We got him for around £4m many years ago. He's been captain for half a decade and whilst he's very limited as a player there have been times he's looked good and his attitude is impeccable. There's a reason he's been kept around, I think his attitude to being a squad member set a tone for the likes of Bruno to come into, I will never forget or underestimate the value of him kicking off at Diame or getting carded from the sidelines.
Lewin to Newcastle on a free this summer is nailed on apparently. Makes sense to me.. Good replacement for Wilson and offers something different to the squad.. A new club in the bag if you like.
Well I mean, whoever it is would be a back up, so for free he's absolutely ideal. He's a good player and he'll be even better in our team. That's something clubs do! They look at a players potential in sides with better players. Like they did with Gordon. Money can then be spent where it's needed. If anyones thinking Newcastle are daft enough to blow their budget on a back up striker they're mistaken.
Hells teeth! Defender extension details emerge The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as was previously assumed. It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or club. The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014, making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015. Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to training.
It'll perhaps be something like: ST: Lewin - £0m RW: Dibling - £25m CB: Guehi - £40m GK: Trafford - £26m
No way we'd get Guehi for 40m, more like 60+m sadly (in which case we wouldn't go for him I suspect). Trafford feels a done deal and Lewin would be good as a replacement for Wilson too. If you told me 30m and we'd have a new number 1 and a back up striker I'd be very happy. Thr real money (40m+ each) will go on RCB and RW but I'm not convinced it will be anyone mentioned so far. If wages weren't silly I'd be looking at Madueke and Disasi at Chelsea, both of whom seem to have been deemed surplus to requirements in their crazy activities and I suspect would be 30-40m buys.
I really can't see us going for DCL because: 1. He's as injury prone as Wilson. 2. He doesn't fit Mitchell's target transfer model. 3. He'd need to take a big pay cut (no way should he walk in as one of our highest earners). I might be wrong, but it just doesn't fit for me.
All good points. I think the transfer model is an interesting one as although he's just turned 28 he's also free so I suspect that if Howe wants him they'll get him in. The salary is apparently around £100k whereas Wilson is on £50k, he'd have to take a pay cut but I doubt anyone is going to offer him near what he's on right now so we'd probably be offering closer to the Wilson salary anyway. If there was any chance of him staying injury free (he's played 28 games so far this season) then he can do a role for us as back up. Basically if the rumours are true and Howe thinks he can get a tune out of him then I trust that he can - his track record so far backs that up.
