I think that the reasoning is twofold. Firstly, Trump has been told to do this to tank the US and world economy by Putin. Secondly, he's surrounded by massively wealthy people who will have been betting on the crash. They'll make a ton of money and then buy up the scraps when it all burns.

The "real reason" is to bring to heel USA corporate globalists who do serious physical manufacturing (specifically in the nations where that is done) . I am actually more hurt by the "zero sum" tariffs on the UK (and what the USA is effectively saying about the economic product/service power of the UK) .
