Finally got to watching the game today whilst at work. Thought we started well, but after the goal we become poor. Possession wise, we are very soft. Dunno if it's to do with decision making or tactics but we just surrendered the ball way too much. Im not a possession for the sake of it person, but youre better off with it than without it.

It was a wonderful goal, the type of goal we dream of getting to see tbh, great team work. Our decisions resulting in turnover of the ball got us a few bookings. Jobe, despite his booking, was impressive. Second half where I thought we started a lot better, he seemed to drop into a different position with Neil going a bit further forward. I see Jobe deeper long term, but I dont see Neil further forward long term.

Roberts and Mundle are key, the wings are key. Mundle is a wonderfully athletic winger, strength and pace and good dribbling, not scared to shoot on either foot. Roberts a tricky little wide man. Both were good.

Rigg looks revitalised, more accomplished on the ball with his fuel tank full again. When hes not there we do miss his graft. Time for him to start scoring again.

Isidor I thought had his moments, but went down twice too easily, he needs to stay on his feet. He seems weak for a bloke his size. But it was in improvement from him I think because he got involved a bit more than I remember.

I really thought Isidor played well despite not scoring, seen quite a few say otherwise

Very good assessment marra, the turnover of possession in the first half was frustrating and poor at times but overall a good and efficient performance and we move on,Hume MotM followed closely by Roberts

Fine margins with strikers mate, hes probably had a solid 5.5, 6 out of 10 sort of game, he scores that chance and it's an 8 out of 10.

Think that’s a fair assessment. He scores that chance it looks like a good game for him, but he missed and done little else. Can’t remember him ever really being involved, just had a look at his stats and they’re pretty poor.

I wouldn't say he missed it, very good save imo ...

... he'll be a key player when Le Fée is back I reckon.

    Would you play someone else?

Some good stuff from yesterday. Main thing that stands out to me is that Jobe is going to the very, very top.

It was a good save to be fair, didn’t mean it as too much of a dig him more that it was the only real chance he had. Not just down to him though, that’s the players around him not creating. Nah, Isidor is the main man. I like Mayenda but he’s not quite as good as Isidor yet imo. They look really good together when they’re both on the pitch but it’s difficult to balance that, i thought Mayenda should’ve been given a chance on the left and Le Fee in the middle for Rigg when we had no left wingers.

I love Isidor. Think he made those defenders think hard yesterday and had a couple of times where he pressed them held the ball well in a game where he was isolated imo

recent bias kicking in for some I think he’s had a couple of meh appearances after getting rested as he’d played a lot of football

imo he’s one of if not the best 9 in the league, just needs to work on heading and composure sometimes, but he has insanse technique and you’d back him to score more than not imo

Chris Mepham on penalties and Alan Browne

    upload_2025-3-31_7-56-3.jpeg

CHRIS Mepham admits he was slightly surprised to see his centre-back partner Luke O'Nien take Sunderland's penalty against Millwall on Saturday - though the Wales international won't be nominating himself for the next one!

    ….

“I'll probably take myself out of that situation," he laughed.

The defender added: "I was a little bit surprised (that O'Nien took it) but at the same time knowing the amount of work Luke puts in and the amount of extras, focusing on his technique and his striking of the ball, he's probably arguably the best to step up and take a penalty so I didn't have any doubts.

“But it's been a weird one with penalties this season, we've been unfortunate."

Mepham said: "I don't think defensively we've been bad but we've probably came away as a team a bit from what got us to where we are.

"That's something we had in our heads before this game, doing the basics well and getting back to where we were at the start of the season, being so difficult to break down."

While Mepham and O'Nien have played plenty of football as a pairing this season, Saturday's backline had a new look to it, with Trai Hume shifting over to left-back and Alan Browne covering at right-back.

It was a new position for the midfielder and Mepham was enormously impressed by how he handled it.

"I thought he was our best player," he said.

"The way he slotted in. You know his experience at this level so there aren't any question marks but for him to make it look so comfortable, you would never have thought he was a centre midfielder playing there.

"He was a pleasure to play alongside. He's played a lot of games and you could see his know-how."

So we still don't have a nominated penalty taker then?

O'Nien was the nominated taker, from RLB's post match interview. Maybe Mepham just wasn't aware or in that conversation.

Mundle might be a better option unless it's late in the game and he has gone off. No idea who should take one in that situation.

Hume plays almost every game, never goes off and can strike a ball ...

... plus he has the right temperament in my opinion, keepers wouldn't phase him..

Thanks mate, didn't see RLB post match stuff. Thinking about it it's reasonable why Mepham wouldn't knowledge, but given the argument and Mundle being upset I think it's something they need to sort out and get clear <laugh>.

I reckon Mundle is a good shout anf the fact he was pissed off not getting it at the weekend shows he has confidence in his ability to take them as most players are happy to see someone else step up. My God there has been some awful penalties taken, that on Saturday was close to the keeper throwing his cap on it buy one thing I will say is there has been a lot of delay before the last 3 which always works in the keepers favour imo!

That Mepham stuff is surprising but then it could be taken out of context.

But there's little point in having a designated penalty taker if the other players don't know about it :D
