A 2.5% wealth tax on assets exceeding £10 million, could generate a minimum of 130 billion where we could raise children out of poverty and provide youth services in every low income community to give the poor little blighters some joy and guidance.
I listened to Rachel Reeves yesterday, she mentioned "working people" dozens of times. I have spent more than half my working life running my own business, employing about 30 people on average, mortgaging my house to raise the funds, regularly working 18 hour days and, often, working straight through, worrying and dealing with banks etc. during times of downturn. The people I worked with were always paid fairly and looked after....I don't even remember one complaint. They started at 7.30 and finished at 5 and knew that there would be work for them to do when they returned the next day. Every single penny of tax demanded was paid on time.Ultimately I received an offer to merge my company with a larger outfit, which I did in order to guarantee its' future and guarantee work for every single person. At that time I received financial reward for what I view as my risk taking and my dedication to the rest of the workforce. Am I not " working people" ? Are " working people" only those who clock in and out, exploited in providing their labour for someone else's gain? Is that what she's saying?
I believe it's labour's mantra to look after the working people. I hope you've managed to achieve a comfortable living after running your business for so long.
Brilliant that mate, 100% respect to you, and your family who, no doubt, endured the peaks and troughs with you
Great to hear marra. Whether we agree or disagree around politics, it's good to hear you are well. Are you at the game Saturday?... the passion is yet to ignite yet... may have a few beers tonight
I'll be there marra.....I'm generally always there. I meet up with lads I've known for over 60 years....we have a pint...or two... and a bit of crack, and discuss the prospects of our beloved club. I wouldn't change it for the world! It's who I am.
I believe this match could be make or break for the rest of the season, let’s hope the lads come back bursting for it.
Personally I hope she means those paid less well for whom life is a bigger challenge. That isn’t meant to disrespect you in any way and genuinely fair play to you for your successes but there is a lot more evidence that some lower paid people who work full time are now suffering due to added running costs. Of course there are some who lend to countries off their interest and that’s where we need to start.
The more you tax the rich, the less desirable you make this country to invest in. Companies are currently closing stores by the bucket loads. Why? Because the government have asked for increased national insurance contribution for their employees. In other words, more tax for the companies. With companies closing down, that means less jobs and less opportunities for the low income communities that you speak about. Low income communities don’t need handouts thrown at them, that will improve nothing in the long run. They need opportunities, they need good jobs. How do you get better opportunities and jobs? You make the country more desirable for wealthy people to invest in. Wealthy people bring knowledge and open businesses and the poorer communities benefit. Continuously raising taxes for wealthy people keeps them away from this country, it stops them investing. Which means less opportunities for the people that need them most. You have to see the bigger picture.
I actually had to look that term up. I thought I was intelligent enough to have known about it. Clearly I wasn’t!! I initially came down on the side of @Dancingstripes and I think to a point he (I assume he anyway) is right. But we can’t tax the rich to the point where they don’t see the point in investing in the country. Neither do we want a totally socialist government where wealth is supposedly redistributed equally as I don’t see that has worked anywhere it has been tried. Human nature being what it is wouldn’t allow it. In theory it’s great, in practice not so much. Be interesting to see the outcome of May 3rd. It’s only my opinion of course but Albanese is a buffoon and Dutton is no better. Things will change when The Pirate Party get into power.
The answer is always somewhere in the middle but a partisan two party system is never ever going to find it. I think Albo is a snivelling coward but I would have him in over Dutton any day. It's a very poor decision to be faced with. Unfortunately I live in a traditional liberal stronghold so labor aren't even an option. Not that I vote given the old citizenship situation. Fortunately our representative is independent. Hoping she, Dr Helen Haines, gets back in.
I used to say that you have to use your vote responsibly. The longer I’ve lived on this planet I’ve learned that the vast majority of politicians, no matter which country I’ve lived in are essentially self serving. So the last couple of local elections here I’ve given my vote to a complete outsider that will have no hope at all of being elected. I’ll be doing the same on May 3rd. My conscience won’t allow me to vote for the two main parties, irrespective of what they say they’ll do.
