(i know im a few hours early, but might not have computer access tomorrow) i was born after beatlemania, and shortly after John Lennon was shot dead, but like many i grew up educated about them from my dad and others, and soon became hooked and fascinated by them and in particular John Lennon. spent hours and hours collecting and researching all about them and him and he soon became one of my idols. i cant imagine what it must have been like the day it was announced he had been shot, as i cant think of a similar instance happening to somebody so massive in my lifetime.. yet every 8th december, despite reading about it all before, i cant help myself looking through all the tributes etc, and researching him all over again and am not ashamed to admit i get a bit emotional about it all.. RIP John Lennon- a true great. and may mark chapman rot in hell. One of the greatest and most powerful songs ever written. RIP.
Being a bit older, I clearly remember the shooting on the news, I also have a Beatles mad friend in New York who has attended The Dakota building every 8th December since his death to hold an overnight vigil(they light candles and sing Lennon songs all night). He was really something special and is actually the No.1 idol of Lambretta junior, so his legacy continues. RIP John Winston Lennon.
Being 21 I don't know as much as most about them or John Lennon, but even now people my age and younger still understand the importance of them. The legacy has a few more generations in it yet! Anyway, he must have been quite a big deal for DJ to change his avatar from JJC!
I remember the day Lennon was shot even though i was only 6 at the time, my parents were upset- r.i.p Lennon
did all programmes stop, or was it just announced on the news? there wasnt sky news or anything then was there, i cant imagine how it spread..these days i find stuff out when i wake up to 15 joke texts about it...
The best I can remember was blanket coverage on radio, TV was a lot different back then but cant remember anything of it
Funny really I never liked the Beatles when I was a nipper though I did like the rolling stones..though yes it was a shame when JL got shot .. Would have been better if it had been Paul M and not John L ...
His memory is kept alive in Australia by a live 2 hr show by John Waters called 'Looking Through a Glass Onion" which I believe was performed in London some years back. I saw it for the second time at the Sydney Opera House last year and the clip below features that performance. He is currently touring regional Aus with the show. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jqXmqoJrpA
I can remember watching it on the news. In fact as I was a 6 1/2 year old kid, it was probably Newsround and John Craven that informed me.
The Lennon shooting was our JFK moment, it was massive news at the time and they did break programmes to announce it, it happened during peak programming(between 6-7.00pm). I also remember exactly where I was when they announced that Marvin Gaye was dead and I also remember finding out Sid Vicious was dead from a newspaper hung on the railings outside Wolfreton School.
I didn't find out about JL death until I turned on the radio in my car at about 2am in the morning just as I was entering Devon, having driven all night from Hull to Falmouth.
always astounds me the way chapman applies for parole..exactly how minutes does he think hed survive outside of the prison gate?
Massively enjoying a Beatles/Lennon night.....in honour of course!.If stuck on desert island with only one Beatles album ...which one and why?..no red or blue answers!
