The word you are looking for is Djinn or Jinn. The quran tells us there are 3 types of sentient 'lifeform' man, angel and jinn The whole genie thing may have come from djinn in folklore or whatever. For example Aladdin and his genie or the arabian nights etc In the case of Aladdin a lot of people dont realise that Alladin means Allah Deen or Gods faith or Gods way of life.
