regarding the dogs in the Hackman case, I believe the initial report stated that two of the dogs were outside. If they were able to drink rainwater they would have survived whilst the remaining would have dehydrated in doors.

Horrific way for them all to go though, first her feeling under the weather but not realizing it was a fatal illness. Just passing out in the bathroom and dying there, then him wandering about the house no idea what's going on not feeding himself.

Then the poor dog dying of thirst.
