There again, I remember when I applied for citizenship some of the questions were things like: have you ever tried to overthrow a government and have you ever been a member of a communist group. ... In University I had actually been part of a group called the "Future Communists", it was completely apolitical though, the name was a joke.

Think they have/can request access to our police database. Like I say they might not check but it's a big risk if you're paying out over a grand for flights and hotel. When you apply for the esta thing it asks if you've ever been arrested and if so you're not eligible and have to apply for a proper visa and supply a police certificate (which lists everything) and do the whole interview at Embassy thing.

The other thing with US law is it doesn't recognise the concept of spent convictions. So anything you were convicted of years ago still counts in their eyes. Land of the free
