They were very violent and threatening in 1970s and in the 90s -2000s as they were growing and getting **** loads of votes. It was the large multicultural demos and carnivals and the don't vote campaigns that broke them. But that's nothing to what's going on in Germany. The fact that people are turning to fascism is so demoralising and heartbreaking. I personally can't stand the tory party but never saw them as nazis. But people like Truss, Patel and Braverman have continuously hooked with the extreme right and it cost 2 of them being MPs but they are looking at Germany and loving it.
I remember it well in the 90's and there was always the spectre of the National Front in south London growing up. Like you say, the coming together of different scenes, a lot of it based in music, rave scene and free parties as well as big organised marches through London, backed by the unions. A lot of them ending up at Brockwell park where people like Billy Bragg used to play free gigs. There was a concerted effort to bring people together, black, white and asian and expose the divisive tactics of the fascists. The problem now as I see it, is that immigration has been used as lever for these people to gain popularity again, and unfortunately the spread of misinformation on social media, fear mongering tactics, along with people sacking off the established media outlets, has given oxygen and a platform for hard line right wingers to gain momentum. To the point now where you have actual fascists in positions of power across Europe, and you have actual fascists in control of media channels. As a result people are being fed a diet of divisive **** where everybody is fighting each other instead of the people who are pulling the levers. And then you look at the US, and you've got Trump and Musk in control.....
