I am basing my personal assessment on two things. Stats & consistency this season (including making unforced errors), and individual player performances seen with my own eyes in a big game against a good team last Saturday at Birmingham, played in front of a genuine 25,000 attendance. It’s this level of game we must be aiming at. I’ve omitted Dixon, Tennai & the loans obv. Worth keeping next season: Edwardes Ramsay Small Jones Mitchell Godden Leaburn Get rid (not good enough): Maynard-Brewer Gillesphey Anderson Campbell Aneke Kanu Berry Ahadme Not bothered if they stay/go: Docherty Mannion Coventry If we are chasing genuine excellence next season, we only have a nucleus of 5-6 players max who are worth retaining. Thoughts ?
Keep Mannion, Maynard -Brewer, Small, Ramsay, Jones, Mitchell, Gillesphey, Edwards, Godden, Leaburn.Campbell, Docherty, Coventry, Berry, Taylor, Assimwe. To go, Watson, Z Mitchell, Ahadme, Aneke, Kanu, Anderson
Were any of that lot Charlton players before October 2022? If not A) I can't comment as I haven't seen them play B) We have far too much player turnover - something I've known for 10 years at least.
Who are our best 3 players? Sold all three last Summer. I wonder which is the best performing period for CAFC since NJ came in; (point per game wise) 1) The time from his appointment to the end of last season 2) This season to date. If the answer is 1) then the Summer sales & signings since have had the net effect of weakening the squad.
I've never liked watching Charlton on TV. You get all the frustration and angst, and none of the benefits of the real atmosphere of actually being at the game. Nothing can compare to that. Even back in the day I only used to watch us on MOTD when I already knew we had won (or got a decent draw). That was before I got my first ST in 2007, after years away from actively supporting.
Top and bottom to stay, the middle get rid. What will be more interesting is who we bring in. If we stay in the 3rd division we'll get another load of carthorses, if we go up the pricks will need a rethink because this team would go back down comfortably.
I'll be honest I'd keep majority of squad bit the get rid of the fringe players. Aneke, Ahadme and Watson defo have to go. I wouldn't actively look to remove anyone else. If we have a similar window to summer last year but to focus on the areas of the pitch that are we weak we should have a squad capable of challenging. We've shown with the squad now that we can but we probably need the one extra summer window to try. The transfers jones requested in summer are seeming to work so if he can do the same again we could compete
I see Danny Hylton has had his contract as a player / coach extended. For those who can’t see any harm in this move, wouldn’t the budget have been better spent on an actual player ? I wouldn’t rule out Hylton still being with us next season.
