In fairness, I think people point to parallels with WWII because Ukraine is the only major land war on the continent of Europe since 1945. Yes, there have been conflicts in the Balkans, civil unrest in Ulster, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, etc, but this is the biggest commitment of armed forces the Russians have deployed since the Battle Of Berlin: way, way bigger even than Afghanistan. And Ireland is not a bad a starting point for comparisons with the Soviet situation of Russia and Ukraine living in harmony: despite the Rus originating in the Ukraine area, and the first capital being Kiev (something Putin is wont to highlight), they have always thought themselves a different people from the rest of the Russian empire despite prominent Soviet figures like Brezhnev being Ukrainian themselves. They, like Georgia, the Baltic States, and others just don't see themselves as part of an imperial version of the CCCP. True, that's their battle - but when they gave up their nuclear weapons to become independent they were supposedly guaranteed their security by the West. Since Putin took Crimea back in 2014 we've done practically everything we can to pretend that never happened, let alone the 2022 invasion. But, as Chamberlain said about Czechovaklia back in '38, 'it's a quarrel in a faraway country, between people of whom we know nothing'. We all hope this war can be ended, but ending it for a year just for Putin to then invade the Baltics and Romania will be the falsest peace of all, but that's probably what will happen now that NATO is basically destroyed. Well played Putin though, he has won this cyber/information war of the last 25 years, and he's won it hands down.

Of course it isn't WWII. Some things are similar and some things are different. You could probably compare it to Napolean, or Charlemagne, the viking invasion of Britain, or Caesar, etc. All those leaders kept going back to try and conquer more and more land too. The moral of the story throughout history is, when someone gets land-grabby and keeps going back for more land... they don't stop, you can't appease them for long. Megalomaniac rulers who get the taste for expansion (Crimea, Georgia, Eastern Ukraine, Moldova) don't tend to stop or get appeased. They keep on going until they're defeated or they die. WWII is merely the most recent in a long history of megalomaniac rulers trying to cement their place in history by conquering more and more land. It's also relevant more than some of the other examples above (maybe Napoleanic wars also relevant) because of the vast allegiances and pacts that are in place. Putin invading Moldova, or Estonia could be the trigger that puts us all at war. (Moldova not part of EU or NATO, but Romania is, and Romania would almost certainly defend Moldova since the two nations consider themselves as one people- and Putin has previously expressed desire to go back and finish his unfinished business there). If Putin gets too good a deal in Ukraine, he'll be back for more.
Oh yeah, America has a rich history of bombing people, there is no doubt about their love for war, they certainly know how to **** other countries up. Bit rich mate you giving history lessons from the States, the very federation that would never allow a state to breakaway. Much like America always reserving the right to intervene in Cuba. Again you are just another warmonger, safely in the US who will never have to lose a drop of blood over the Ukraine war - I still remember the young Ukranian men trying to make a run for the border, so they didn't get forced into this ****, it didn't end well for them either, ordered to their death to fight for the freedom of people that will never have to fight themselves, to protect Europe lol. Maybe you need to go visit the Ukranian frontline so you can get a sense of what death smells like.
