Wouldn't want to play Coventry at Wembley or in the playoffs in general. Not just because they are a pretty good team but because I couldn't be bothered with everything that surrounds our games against them. Would be a load of trouble in London that weekend.

Any benefit in looking at Club Wembley membership at this stage (I know....we could still make auto) ...or is there no point until nearer the time? Not done it before.

Agree with you there, know exactly what you mean

It was weird knowing Boro or Coventry in a final the last time we reached the play offs. Wasn’t to be unfortunately

Almost certain to be at home in the 2nd leg too. That makes a big difference imo.

Sunderland's detailed training ground Leeds United debrief

    upload_2025-2-19_7-23-32.jpeg

    https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/s...etailed-training-ground-leeds-united-debrief/

SUNDERLAND will use the pain of their Leeds United heartbreak as motivation in the remaining months of the Championship season and haven't yet given up on automatic promotion, with captain Dan Neil saying: "We're certainly not done!"

"My message would be let's stick together," said the midfielder.

"Let's have a right good run at these last remaining games and, you know, what will be will be and we'll try on the pitch to get the best possible outcome for everyone.

“If you looked at the start of the season and you said that we were going to be fourth with 15 games to go and still with a chance of getting automatic promotion...like I said, there's twists and turns yet to come in the season.

"Obviously, the way the season's panned out, we probably should be in a little bit better position in terms of automatic promotion. But if you looked at the start of the season and if you look at last year, how we finished, you can see the hard work and the effort that everybody at the club has put in to turn last season around.

"I'm proud of all the boys, all the staff this year of what we've achieved so far. But we're certainly not done.

"We're certainly going to give our absolute all in these last few games to get the best possible outcome.”

Emotions were understandably raw in the away dressing room at full-time at Elland Road, so Neil and his fellow leaders in the Sunderland squad were keen to let the dust settle before holding a more detailed debrief at the Academy of Light.

"All the lads were hurting in there," he said.

“When the emotions are so high at the time, a few lads spoke, but I think we have to wait until the emotions have calmed down.

"We have to speak about it because these big games, in the second half we have to find better ways of dealing with that pressure. I think we're such a good team in possession that we could have got up the pitch a lot better.

“But all the lads are together. We've got an unbelievable togetherness in this team. I think you've seen that all year with the character we've shown to come from behind in a lot of games.

"We're going to stick together. We're going to look at this game, and the remaining games are all cup finals. We're going to be prepared.

“Everybody needs to get behind each other. Whether it's players, staff, fans - all associated with the club. All these lads love playing for this club. And we'll do anything to help this club get to where we all believe it belongs."

Now that is a proper call to arms/rallying cry, difference from previous generations is that he means it.

At the start of the season I was concerned that his contract situation and the captaincy was a burden on him and was affecting his game.

To be fair to the lad, whilst his contract situation remains up in the air he has knuckled down and been our best player from November to date and is growing as a captain game on game.

    Keep going Dan.

I have to say this, and I’m sure some will roll their eyes and say ‘how predictable’, but I can’t believe the apathy from some of our supporters.

There's been a mentality switch since the start of the season that’s understandable and baffling to the same degree. We started off with most believing the playoffs would be a great achievement after the gloom of last season. If we’d started badly, and were bottom instead of top, the mood would’ve been terrible. If we’d then started to improve, and were fighting our way up the table, then arrived at fourth place, guaranteed playoffs, with a chance of automatics, I’d guess people’s enthusiasm would be much greater.

Yet there seems to be a theory that ‘we've blown it’, the team has given up and failed the supporters. Some are now saying we wouldn’t have any momentum for the playoffs and would be beaten by the likes of Burnley despite them not managing to score against us or be the better team in either game.

There's realism and then there’s pessimism.

The facts are that we're a very good team, with the best squad we've had all season, and a great chance of promotion ...

... Neil’s right, we all need to believe and pull together.

I love this team. They put the amount of effort in that we would, as fans, and absolutely deserve backing to the hilt.

I believe that you don't live in the North East?

You wanna hear the **** I hear on a daily basis.

Backstory - this club has been on the up for a few years now, there was a seemingly huge blip last season, which has now turned into a minor blip with what has come since. We lost to the best team in the league.

Yet, everytime we lose or draw, even at times when we win, the snide comments of "typical sunderland", "we are ****e", "player A is not good enough", "they won't spend any money".

It's mostly from people who know very little who spout **** to fit in, but it doesn't half get to me after a while.

There’s a significant portion of the fanbase who have never recovered from the tail end of the Short years plus the disastrous Madrox days. However they still retain the ‘sleeping giant’ legends that were given to us when we were young. It’s a toxic combination that doesn’t help the club imo.

I was over for the Luton match and had to move when Samed came on. The clown in front had given a running commentary of all our errors, misplaced passes and shots that weren’t goals. Everyone was rolling their eyes but saying nowt.

As Samed took to the pitch there was a barrage of criticisms finishing off with ‘He’ll never make a footballer as long as he lives.”

I pointed out that he'd almost won the French title and played in the Champions League to which he replied, ‘Aye but that’s Europe’.

    As I left I said, ‘You’re a real walking encyclopaedia …

… sadly for us you’re also a talking encyclopaedia’.

He didn’t like it when everyone laughed <laugh>

The not spending baffles the **** out of me, cause it's absolute ****ing bullshit!

They don't spend money on par with clubs who have:

    a. Parachute payments,
    b. Sold players for high sums, or;
    c. Owners who are wanting to chuck loads at it!

All of which can be quite short term anyway and potentially financially disastrous.

But they will spend to but players who have a chance of improving the team especially in long term development and turning a profit. Not only does it seem more sensible I think it's more exciting to watch them develop aswell!
