Probably 7 out 10 based on a January window only which isn’t bad. Got 3 positions we need and all look like they will improve the squad. DM would have been ideal but I think the stature of DM we need was never going to be a January thing.
I think the DM solution is gonna be a tough one. It’s a position where there isn’t a lot out there. I can see us fixing the squad elsewhere, and then coaching someone we already have to be better in that role on a more permanent basis. Our next step surely has to be sorting out our plans for the insane amount of wingers we’ve collected, and workout who we sell to free up funds, as well as reducing the wage bill.
We've reduced the wage bill by £14m pa over the past two years. Villa and Newcastle are now ahead of us. And as PS and I have calculated (we may be wrong), we probably have scope to now increase it by £20-25m pa and still be totally fine. In terms of wingers, I think Son might leave this summer if we win a trophy. If not then definitely next summer and he'll play a much reduced role next season, he clearly can't cope with the workload of four competitions anymore. Werber will go back to Germany and who knows, maybe he'll take up basket weaving and find something he's good at. Solomon by all accounts will be signed by Leeds, especially if they come up. Odobert still remains a great unknown. I do wonder if Brennan could be a surprise departure this summer. Mikey is the player I'm most concerned about.
He's a player who is already close to being beyond our budget, had we not bought him when we did. If we can continue to identify and sign talent of his (and Bergvall 's) ability, we can build a competitive team, despite the shackles that COYS Daniel applies to us. It seems to be what Lange does best. We just need a coach who will use what he's given, not in extremis, but as a policy decision...and we're back in the game. It could be Ange...or not, I'm ambivalent. However, if this is to work, the whole club needs to be 100% behind it
