Not hopped the ones without airports or streets like a jungle but we'll keep following the herds down to Greece.
Spent a couple of weeks in Thailand over Christmas. Bangkok been the first port of call loved it but quite mentally busy and noisy at the same time very safe with the most helpful friendly people . Than onto Khao lak for a couple of weeks absolutely fell for the country the weather , food but most of all the people make the place really kind with never a hint of crime . We are planning on going back for three weeks this Christmas to see more . We are currently in los Christianos Tenerife were we have met a large contingent of city fans from malt shovel who all met each other on one of Acuns Turkey trips . Needless to say we all enjoyed last Saturdays result and the tables are booked for Yolos bar tomorrow night .
Was going to take the kids abroad for first time this year, i havent been abroad for years . We have to go in holidays as my mrs works in a school. Was finding it all a bit pricey but was saving and searching for ages, though to be honest i was annoyed at paying so much for flights i would rather just stay at home, the older i get i cant help but think holidays are a lot of money for a weeks worth of photos, I would rather buy a big television or something. ... but detemined to be a good father i thought we would do it I told my daughter and she was sulking we cant go back to Haven like last year , so long story short we are now going to Butlins, not everybodies cup of tea , but she is chuffed and she cant wait and i am approx 2k better off... win/win
Anyone been to Vietnam? Any visit recommendations ie Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh etc..Any travel tips etc. Thanks. Might be going in around September.
John's been based there ever since they ran him out of Aberdeen. I'm sure he'll have some good advice.
Strange place Drunk loads of coffee as well as beer!! Gorgeous women no trout pouts Off to see Marseille v Lyon tonight
Check typhoon season dates and avoid. It’s a lovely country. We only did northern half - Hanoi is fab. Get the overnight train down to Danang then go to Hoi An which is beautiful. Halong Bay is well worth it too - you can hire your own crewed boat quite cheaply if you want to stay away from the crowds. I’d love to go back. Dream holiday. Be careful when crossing roads - walk slowly and carefully in a direct line and the traffic will avoid you (hopefully). Carefully watch any taxi meters in case they’ve been rigged - if so, just insist on getting out.
Thanks...Good advice. I've looked at the monsoon season...ie Sept to November or thereabouts....when the temperatures are quite high.....Jan to March/April seems the best time to avoid the rain, but maybe not as warm. I'll be going with someone who's been before therefore their advice will go a long way. We'll do Hanoi, Hoi An, Minh Bihn, Dang Nang or other places, though previous visitor wasn't that taken by HCMC, aka Saigon.
It was February when we went. 30 degrees most of the time. All the places you list are fabulous. It was my favourite country to visit. We went on a tour with a guide and about 12 other people. It's much bigger than it looks on a map. I am old enough to remember the Vietnam War. The Co Chi tunnels near Saigon are interesting. I turned the the offer to fire an AK47 at a dollar bullet. I just can't call it Ho Chi Mihn City. Saigon is good but a bit too much like all large modern cities. Its post office, cathedral and market are all interesting. We went on a boat down the Mekong. Well worth doing. We really liked Hanoi and Halong Bay. The scenery round there is like The Beach film. The highlight was Hoi An. Stunning little place, especially at night. Our only regret was that we went to a beach resort after Saigon. It really wasn't pleasant. We should have just carried on to Cambodia instead. Watch out for the motor bikes. There are thousands of them. Tigermaul is right about crossing the roads. Just keep going at a steady pace and they will miss you. If you stop or run, they won't! We loved Vietnam and would go back.
Cheers Tigger. I've heard the tip re: the motorbikes before....ie keep walking in a straight line and don't stop. Saigon sounds like its worth a short visit ie two days...Might be going on to NZ from there, but we'll see.
