Morning. Went to bed at a sensible time and got the recommended hours of sleep. Feel like a woman in a shampoo advert.

Hearing people still going on about the Barclays technical issues, now resolved.

I think banks need to find a way of integrating services, so if Barclays go down, you can go to say Lloyds Banking Group to make payments. Anyway checking with AI apparently it's not possible because some banks are operating old systems, also some banks fear losing their competitive edge and it's expensive to do. There is hope Open Banking might change this, afterall what's stopping a third party developer doing it.

didn’t even know there was an issue. Had about 5 payment notifications come through this morning from Barclays on the app.

strange that 90% of the cash is ‘electronic’ and can easily be transferred about and taken from each others cash points, but banks operate at branch level unable to help and do payments?

I assume if you tried a transfer it wouldn't go through, from what I understand it delayed house sales and wage payments, end of month as well.

Edit: I expect the money was sitting there but they just couldn't see it, I would have thought this would have affected branches as well, what's left of them.

Although I find the wages payments a strange one, because they go in on a Friday, not a Saturday, so unless the payments system was down from midnight going into the Friday, they would have gone through - unless people are saying they couldn't get the cash out on the Friday morning. The next payment date wouldn't have been until the Monday.

Very strange, I hope they are going to help with any costs incurred by customers due to their issue. Must be covered by financial conduct authority?

I think they first started having issues on Wednesday / Thursday. A mate of mine card got declined in the supermarket as his account hadn’t shown his salary as gone through and other money in his account was not being shown on his account. He’s a bit older than me and doesn’t have the app for mobile banking.

He mentioned it to me Thursday after he tried to do his weekly shop. Not exactly sure what he did on Friday as he’s a bit of a dud when it comes to technology (and being divorced he just coasts along), but still couldn’t either use his card or get money from the ATM, so I lent him some money even though he didn’t really want it.

If that was 4pm Friday, I guess that must be faster payments, rather than bacs. It had gone over and just not shown.

That was kind of you to help him. I really hope Barclays pick up a big bill from this or a loss of a lot of customers, otherwise there is no incentive to change the way things are done.

Generally I've got some cash in the house, so i'd like to think if I was in that situation, I'd have the means until the problem was fixed. Sadly for a lot of people it comes so soon after Christmas. A lot of people save up on their points store cards, but having just been through the festive season, most would have emptied them on the xmas shop.

Only other alternative is if you can get an online shop on your credit card, but I assume the cards would have been rejected.

Retail shops use to have voucher slips, where they had a simple manual contraption, to crunch the card through and it prints out on the slips, and they then just manually enter the amount of the payment, trouble is I doubt most retailers know what one of them is these days...the last time I saw one of them was a couple of decades back in petrol stations.

He’s a good mate, who I’ve known most of my life, and would do the same for us at the drop of a hat. As said earlier, he’s now divorced and seems to be a bit behind the times with technology. In fact now I think about it his ex did most of the day to day stuff. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him use his card when we go for a pint, it’s always cash. Anyways, he messaged me earlier saying he’s got my money out and wanted to drop it off. I said Tuesday (pub quiz night) will be fine <laugh>
