Not sure if he is american he might actually be european, Americans are usually friendly to us sister states of England - Scotland, Wales, Norther Ireland and Ireland And for the record I've stayed in Shetland and they speak no form of English what so ever.
Actually im not sure if NI, Scotland and Wales are actually countries. I could be wrong but I think they fall into the bracket of nation states
Having lived in the States, they constantly had to be educated as to the difference between English and British. And these were New Yorkers!! When I last filled out an Immigration form on the plane 2 years ago, the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish could all put that down but I couldn't put English, it had to be British. I refused and was told I would not be allowed off the plane until I filled it in correctly.
