Think I’d prefer to keep him and let him go on a free. Is definitely a good option in the Championship but wouldn’t want him in the squad if we get promoted
If we can get £6m for him then I'd rather spend that elsewhere. That is about half of what we paid for Fernandes, there is value to be had in Europe. £6m for a player that probably won't start week in week out is a lot in the Championship
Agree, but it’s a risk. We know Aribo can perform in the Championship but not in the PL. We sell him in the summer, buy a replacement while we are a Championship club and potentially have someone who may not even cut it at Championship level, or someone like Aribo who can’t make the step up, but on a longer contract than Aribo would be. Easier to attract PL players if you are a PL team so I’d prefer keeping him then letting him go when we are hopefully promoted and can attract a better player than this summer. Getting £6m or whatever is irrelevant as I think we will raise enough from other likely sales to be able to keep Aribo and let him leave for free, like we did with Adams and Armstrong. Only risk is we see him having a good year in the Championship as a reason to give him a 5 year new deal
I'd rather keep Aribo than rely on Smallbone. I know it's not an either/or, but... Joe's been playing pretty well last couple of games too.
I wouldn't be desperate to keep him or desperate to sell him so for me it'll depend what's going on with the squad and manager really. What formation are we playing? Is Shea Charles part of the squad? Are we signing Gronbaek permanently? Who can we get in on loan? Is anyone interested in other fringe players like Smallbone?
Love Joe, but he is also frustrating. Great on his day, but not consistent enough. Squad player at best if we are going for top two. Plus hes on 60k a week .
Yeah he's wildly inconsistent, even in the Championship. Like others have said, okay with him sticking around next season to be a squad player, okay with selling him if a decent offer comes in.
I am a fan of Joe Aribo. When he has performed well, he has been one of our better players. If he had not been injured and enjoyed a better run in the squad when he first joined, I think some in here would be more favourable.
In honesty, apart from the best players we have I’d like to see a big switch up. Players like Aribo & Smallbone aren’t good enough, much rather us do everything in our power to keep Fernandes & sign more quality players in cm. Better to have 2 genuine Prem quality players than 4 average championship if we aiming to come straight back up
I’m not a fan of Aribo and I had no idea he was on 60k a week!! It’s unreal that a player that bang average can earn so much money but good on his agent. Sell him asap and get a player who can balance on one leg to start with. There are a million midfielders who could improve the squad as his replacement.
I think it is believable in as such as we were EPL at that time and got him cheap as he only had 12 months left in his deal. Hence the higher wage.
The other question is what's happened with his relegation pay cut and promotion pay rise. His old Premier League wage may not be the same amount he's on now. Also, according to this guy the average Premier League wage is £72k so it's not even THAT high.
I’d have assumed his wage may have reduced upon relegation, although as a team threatened with relegation at the time he may have insisted he took no reduction. If he did have reduced wages in the Championship I’d imagine they simply went to what they were pre relegation.
United apparently looking at Dibling to replace Garnacho. They are usually quite easy to rip off so wouldn't mind selling him there
Don't really see the point in getting rid of Garnacho and buying Dibling from a Man Utd perspective. And it would be an awful move for his career, but great for his bank balance.
Think it would be a good move for him personally. Big club where he could play regularly. Who are their wingers if Garnacho Rashford and Antony leave, the second two look basically nailed on to leave this window and he only goes there to replace Garnacho according to this report? Diallo and that’s about it? Can see him playing a fair bit and given chances to prove himself
They are an absolute mess of a club. So much baggage there and it's been going on for years and years and doesn't seem to change regardless of who the manager is, or how many hundreds of millions they spend on players. Absolutely massive media and fan scrutiny too. Whether it's good for his career is so much more than just would he get game time! I feel like they just ruin player after player who for some reason still keep going there because they are a massive club and used to be good 10/15 years ago, no doubt the massive wages they pay is a huge factor in that. I don't know the lad so this may be unfair, but the impression I get is that he'd really struggle in that environment.
Take your point but if he wants a move to a big club they are the only ones where he’d see any sort of playing time, and whilst not the only factor it is arguably the most important. Unless you are putting teams like Everton in that category as well. Spurs been the most linked and he’s not getting in their team any time soon, and they are a laughing stock as well. In fact the only big clubs who have not been a complete laughing stock at times in the last 5/6 years are City, Liverpool and Arsenal and he’s not going to any of them to play. It’s the age old question of does he want a move to a West Ham type side where he will play loads and then hopefully get a move to a big team, obviously runs the risk of injury/him flopping/whoever big team buys instead of him turns out good. Or does he go straight to a big team and know it’s going to be unlikely he plays much unless he really trains and kicks on. Almost all professionals will take the second option I think, they will back themselves to be good enough and the wages won’t be bad either
Forest, Fulham, Bournemouth, Villa & Newcastle would all be good options for him. It's just whether they would pay the £50m we want. I agree Man u wouldn't be a good move for him in some ways, but ultimately it is still a way better option than staying with Saints. In fact, apart from Maybe Leicester (financial mess) pretty much every team in the league is a more promising proposition than Saints. Don't underestimate how awful we are.
