To be fair, swapping Ajax's bench for SAFC's may be a tough sell. Being completely honest I only wanted him as a loan for the season anyway. If we're bringing in a player with an eye for a permanent I'd want a different type of striker
I do think the fact we have Isidor and Mayenda firing it's not going to be simple to get a striker in like. I can see us not managing to get one, as you'd have to promise gametime and with them two firing would a player look at that in Jan and agree?
Yeah that's what I mean. A fully fit Browne is very good for the squad and no concerns with him getting game time for me. Super experience and adds some steel.
Love the rumours...but in all honesty we really don't know if Sunderland are/were actually in for him. The way this club does business is very secretive, so I take with a pinch of salt what so called "in the know" journalists have to say. I'd say a good percentage is mere click bait
Was my thinking as well. Is it a quote from the player or agent? I'd like to think we wouldn't be making an attempt if he has no interest.
I do find the whole striker thing interesting they bid for that Bamba in the summer and allegedly orban and both would have been substantial fees in the current context, I’m pretty sure there was a third as well. this January we’ve gone for cannon and whilst allegedly loan to buy we were talking 10m plus all in whilst wouldn’t want to buy someone for the sake of it we obviously feel that it’s a position we can improve on so it would be a shame to not see it addressed. is it also worrying that we haven’t been able to get any of these deals over the line? More of it highlights the challenges for me than a worry.
Yeah indeed. If we did manage to keep Rigg for one more year of development we'd be beginning our midfield rebuild from a base of Rigg, Browne, Aleksic, Triantis and potentially Ekwah (if he doesn't turn into a few more million for the pot). Get a couple of £5m players - one a physical monster - and we'd be well set to go again IMO.
I think we know more, now. We know that Isidor is good enough. RLB clearly believes that Mayenda will be. We also have Abdellahi and Ogunsuyi who the club believe in. Add in the issues around January transfers and I'm completely unsurprised that they don't want to commit big money to it right now. Cover and options with flexibility make sense (eg a loan). However I don't think the club's mindset will ever switch to solely 'win now'. In the end I don't think there is any single signing we could make up front that would absolutely guarantee promotion anyway.
It is also a throwaway line about Ajax struggling to shift excess players. I'd not particularly take much from it.
I thought he would like to check out all offers, unless he doesn’t realise he’s a reject where he is now.
I also don't think we're anywhere near as "desperate" for a striker as some do. Desperate is what we were last season, not this one.
Which is why I’ve wanted Frigan from the start A) can probably make an instant impact B) unlikely to demand to play every week straight away C) big upside
All about the strength in depth for me. I agree, we aren’t desperate in the same sense as last season. That being said, if Wilson was injured tomorrow then we become significantly weaker. We all know we have a real opportunity, and would be good to just bulk up that little bit more for the run in.
