Of course, but some would, most likely the educated or economic migrants, but also not all the Poles did!

My point really is that we've got a bunch of people coming here, govt isn't dealing with them efficiently, many don't want them here in the first place but there must be amongst them a lot of skills the UK needs. Shouldn't we be trying to pick out that resource?

Yes. Have points systems like some other countries do. Poles, and some other Eastern Europeans came here and did jobs well below their qualifications rather than be out of work back home and hope to find something where they could use their qualifications. Most spoke pretty decent English . The aforementioned things cannot be said of a lot of those arriving.

But we don't know how many, what they know, what they can do and nobody seems to be trying to find out. I'm not saying it's easy but it has to be worth a look, even if turns out to be fruitless.

I'm an idiot. I meant tar.

Nice swerve as you understood what I meant.

The murderer I met seemed perfectly pleasant so I wouldn't say whether you like them or not is a good guide.

    It wouldn’t be.

The answer to migrants from places like the Middle East is to end the problems that drive people from those countries in the first place.

When Assad was toppled in Syria, a fair few Syrians went home because the new regime wasn’t (as) insane.

I came across a Polish woman a few times between marriages as we used the withdrawal contraception method. Nice girl, but had a resting miserable face, even when she was happy, and it affected my ego.

Constantly was asking her if something was wrong and her telling me she was the happiest she'd ever been, but said whilst her facial expression was like I'd just run over her cat. Either she was lying to me for some reason or more likely the generational misery of suffering the most in WW2 and from Soviet henchmen, despite being a hard worker.

It's hard to know what's true, because we're all being fed bullshit constantly.

Why does it have to be worth a look? It would be utter madness. It would simply encourage even more to enter illegally and / or to overstay their visas!!
And maybe if many didn't throw away any evidence of, or lie about, who they actually are, where they are from, how old they are, etc etc on arrival then we would already know that information. Hmmn, wonder why they do that. Then there's hundreds of thousands who have illegally overstayed that we actually do already sort of know who they are and what they can (maybe) do; just in many cases not exactly where they currently are or what they are really doing!
Besides the encouraging even more to come, the fact is our infrastructure is already beyond creaking (homes, hospitals, medical practices, welfare bill, etc etc).
We so obviously need a highly effective points based system, based on critical needs only, and to stop and / or return anyone who has no legitimate right to be here (or to still be here).
I sense the authorities are waking up to, or at least starting to acknowledge, the deep associated problems of not doing the above (societal division & cultural breakdown, fraud, crime, drugs, benefit system costs, etc etc etc).
If we would have had in place an effective points and needs based system, with a border control that stopped people entering and / or overstaying, then we wouldn't even need to be discussing what you suggest.

Same here. I used to work with quite a few Poles (both here in the UK and in Poland). Almost without exception, lovely, friendly, helpful people

    Probably partly true.
But far from the whole picture and never going to be the answer (filling jobs with cheap labour via illegal workforce), as per reply above to Plum.

My dad did his National Service alongside a Polish Brigade/Battalion - he reckoned they were brilliant guys until they had a skinful; then they wanted to be scrapping, if they couldn't find someone to scrap with they'd go toe-to-toe with each other, punch lumps off each other and then go for another drink!

My old man came across a few in the war. Said if he wanted someone alongside him in a scrap when the odds were against him he would, like everyone else, choose a Gurkha then a Pole.
Friend of mine’s dad was captured at Dunkirk and marched to Poland. Around 25 of 320 came home. He weighed 5 stone when carried off the plane back home. He said that some of them wouldn’t have survived if Polish women hadn’t thrown bread and other scraps over the barbed wire for which a number were shot but still they came. Someone being disrespectful about the Poles would have got short shrift from him.
