Think I would have gone for a goal that's more achievable in the short to medium term and that would have been hybrid, yes it's still polluting but it would cut emissions if everyone switched, you just wouldn't achieve your long term goal - but it's something that offers part of what you want until they sort out a sensible and practical solution ie such as what you have mentioned.

What they don't seem to realise, all this green stuff is affecting those that can least afford it, especially with energy bills, and I guess Trump has recognised that with his drill baby drill comment. I think if governments want to be taken seriously over Green measures there has to be sensible and practical solutions, affordable by everyone, but politicians are so out of touch.

I hear Rachel Reeves took a plane to some climate summit, this is how much of pisstake it all is, the politicans all on the Green banwagon think it's ok to travel the way they do and wonder why we don't want to jump on their cause, if you want the population to do something, you have to set the example or just get laughed at.

Someone is bullshitting us, who or why i don't know.
Remember a few years back they introduced "carbon credits" for companies that were high producers to limit their production.
Great idea you may think, then you find out that any company that did'nt use all it's credits could sell them to another company that needed more.
This tells me it was total ****, surely if alloted credits were not needed then that was good because less CO2 would be produced but no, instead you could make money off them and let some other company pollute more because in reality it made no difference.

It’s because we are pointing out the hypocrisy of some people on here. Calling out Elon Musk as vile because he done the Nazi salute but supporting Jeremy Corbyn who done the Nazi salute.

It’s totally relevant, Milk just doesn’t want it to be so he came out with that bullshit rather than holding his hands up about supporting a guy who done the Nazi salute (Corbyn)

Personally think he's a right nob. Showed his true colours all then years back when he slandered the diver man who rescued the Thai kids because his ego got busted because the guy didn't accept his useless mini sub.

Only got away with it cause he's a rich guy in the u.s. so could afford a great lawyer

Sandra said she used to depend on her winter fuel payment, but when it became means tested her pension pushed her £20 a week over the threshold so she lost it.

"I've had to take out a credit card, overdraft and a credit account to be able to pay for things this winter," she told the BBC.

Sandra is one of the 11 million pensioners who lost the payments, worth up to £300, just as temperatures dropped.

The government said it was committed to supporting pensioners but charity Age UK said it had seen a 60% increase in calls to its advice line during the worst of the cold snap.

    'I feel a failure'

"I have £4 in my [bank] account currently," said Sandra, 66, who lives alone in County Durham. "I'm paying off my credit [card] account month by month, something that is a direct result of losing the winter fuel allowance.

"Psychologically, it makes you feel a bit of a failure.

"We're still in the middle of winter, so I'm just hoping and praying we don't get another cold snap because I don't have anywhere to go if I can't pay my bills."

Think she can apply for pension credit and then will get the winter fuel payment.

I don't. It sounded from the story that her income was minimal, she had £4 in the bank, so it would seem likely that she'd be entitled to some benefits ?

Not sure how the benefits work if I’m honest. @Solid Air 2 might be the guy for that. Think he used to work in that area. I’m just reading that she’s £20 over the limit so it was removed.

Just had a look at the eligibility critera

    Eligibility
    • You can get Pension Credit if you're over State Pension age and have a low income
    • You can get Pension Credit even if you have other income, savings, or own your home
    • You might get extra help if you're a carer, severely disabled, or responsible for a child or young person
    Housing costs
    • Pension Credit can help with housing costs like ground rent, service charges, mortgage interest payments, and charges for tents and site rents
    • If you get the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, your income and savings aren't taken into account
As far as I understand it, the Winter fuel payment is means tested, so if her pension is £20 over the limit, then she won't get it. But she might still qualify for Pension credit if her income is low, which could help her out with her other costs and mean she could afford her heating bills.

Or does qualification for Pension credit, automatically mean you qualify for winter fuel payments ? I don't know.

I do know though, that there are millions of pounds of benefits that go unclaimed that people are entitled to. Sounds like Sandra could do with some support from Citizens advice or Gov.uk to work out what she's entitled to

Call me sinister but I don’t think Labour wanted everyone to claim pension credit. I remember reading at the time that if everyone who could claim pension credit, did so, then we’d not have made any savings so the full scheme would have been totally pointless. They basically knew old pensioners would just retreat into their own bubble about this.

At least well paid train drivers were handed more money so pensioners would go without. Always look for the positives.

Yeah I don't agree with that. I think they wanted to end the automatic entitlement to winter fuel payments as every person of pensionable age was getting it, when only a percentage of that group actually needed it.

There's a perception that all pensioners sit there with a knitted blanket on their knees with one bar of the electric fire on, clutching a hot water bottle, when the reality is that for that generation, a lot of them are very comfortably off. Having being able to afford to buy their homes on modest wages, had very decent private pension pots as well as state pension etc. For these people, there's no way they need a free handout.

Not discounting those who are in actual need. And I think the system has been changed so that those on a low income get pension credits so that they qualify for winter fuel payment. There will always be people who slip through the net though, and I think more work needs to be done to support these people.

But I agree with the basic principle of ending the winter fuel allowance as a blanket benefit for every pensioner.

I’m not against stripping it from the folks who don’t need it.

It’s been terribly managed though and nothing was ever put in place to support those less fortunate.

Keir Starmers first few months as PM are incredibly similar to Margaret Thatchers first few months as PM.

Both Thatcher and Starmer benefit from a split opposition too, Thatchers first reelection campaign saw her lose overall votes, but Labour and then SDP split the vote and helped her win

Will the Tories and Reform give Starmer an easy win as well?

This isn't aimed at you. I think it's shameful some of the bitterness I've seen aimed at pensioners, this is the sort of thing the Tories do, blame people on beneits for the state of the nation. I can never think of one ocassion in my lifetime where I was bitter towards pensioners - these are the sort of arguments that the politicians love to push though their agendas. I think it's disgusting and wrong. Yes, there are some very well off pensioners, but as a result of an ill thought through policy it;s the worst off that will suffer as usual.
