On a technical level, Ashbee was average. I don’t know why people can’t separate the technical side and other aspects of football that made him a solid captain and leader for us.

Good captain, good leader but average footballer. Don’t know how anyone could find that controversial.

Yes, but an average footballer, especially on the ball. Not an insult either, he just was.

I'm saying he was about as good as Smallwood with the ball at his feet and again, that's not an insult to either of them.

Matt Crooks will be City's first signing of the window when his move from MLS side Real Salt Lake is confirmed, with the dynamic midfielder signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Tigers.

It's hoped Crooks will be followed by more new arrivals, with City in talks with Leeds over a loan move for striker Joe Gelhardt, who was on the bench at the weekend and is understood to be keen to push the move forward and make it happen.

City have also agreed a fee with a selling club over a winger with extensive Championship experience, with a conclusion on that deal expected in the next 24 hours or so. The Tigers are also in talks with two clubs over two defenders, again, a pre-requisite being the need to have played regularly in the second tier.

Willy Boly is a player of interest but getting him out of Nottingham Forest will not be easy with the Reds more likely to sanction the departure of Andrew Omobamidele, unless they can bring in adequate cover. Former target Ryan Porteous is another player the Tigers like, and could be on his way out of Watford.

The Tigers hierarchy is acutely aware of the club's perilous position at the bottom end of the league and believes players that have vast experience of the level are key to supplementing what Selles already has at his disposal.

Louie Barry is another key target for City but the East Yorkshire club face a battle to prize him away from Aston Villa in the next week or so. The Tigers have a good working relationship with the Premier League club, but know other clubs higher up the league are also keen to sign the 21-year-old hotshot who has bagged 15 goals for Stockport County in the League One promotion race this term.

Depends what you mean by footballer though. On the ball he wasn't amazing (though better than people made out) but he was very good at defending, tackling, winning headers including the odd set piece goal and he had a very good football brain. Those are all elements of being a footballer.

We play at 12pm on Sunday so any new signings need to be paperwork done and registered in the squad by lunch time on Saturday if we plan on involving them at all at the weekend. Unless anything suddenly speeds up, is it looking like Crooks being the only one in before Doncaster?

Decent enough goal, seen better, and a Norfolk resident has more fingers than he scored goals for us. I was also there, last time I travelled by coach, the heater was on cold all the way there and a young lad puked up in the aisle, never again. Oh, and I was at our smallest ever crowd, I don't believe in reincarnation. :emoticon-0138-think

He was an average footballer. Not an insult. Most professional players are average. Some are good, some are world class, some are bad, most are average, as was Ashbee.

I’d say he’s probably on par with someone like Travis at Blackburn.

He was an average player but he succeeded in the meteoric rise through the divisions. What he lacked in skill he certainly made up for by having the heart of a Tiger(a rare trait nowadays)?

A fine example to those around him and he'll go down as a Club legend due to his desire and leadership...
