Of course Methven is pleased with these stupid rule changes He carries on picking up his handsome six figure CEO salary, regardless. But for long suffering fans, who want us to get out of this piss poor league, it’s very bad news. The rule change comes in this Summer - good news for big spending Birmingham & Wrexham, who have ambitious owners. Very bad news for us, unless the investors now decide to move quickly and spend in January ..
Well said Scabby. We'll all be in our graves before Charlton gain promotion back to the Championship at this rate.
An excellent point has been made on the equivalent thread on CL. A mid table L1 club that can apparently pay handsome salaries to execs Methven, Scott, Rodwell, Warwick & Elliott - yet has a crap pitch & no player budget (which the execs want to reduce further). Something smells wrong
Methven has got no skin in the game, in terms of an emotional attachment / ambition to get us promoted. Do you think he cares that we are a mid table League One club ? Ditto Andy Scott and Rodwell - both already on their 4th / 5th league clubs. It’s just a job and a wedge to them. Given that we have already spent our (cough) “4th highest budget” incredibly badly, and our scouting & recruitment departments are clearly dire, why would we suddenly do better next season on a budget that would be reduced by at least 40%. The ambition is now so low, it’s barely disguised. “A five year project”, driven by a manager who’s already said publicly that it’s his dream to manage Cardiff City, and staffed by a group of Academy kids that would be sold pronto by this SMT if they are even half decent. As Wrexham & Birmingham are proving, go big or go home at this level.
Charlie boy is delighted about this. He can continue dreaming about only a million pounds loss per season. With Scott and NJ picking the players it’s very bad news. Our absent billionaires can continue to use us as an offshore vehicle. Win win for them. Isn’t this lack of spending the reason why Duchatelet bought us in the first place back in the day ,to get around it by owning lots of clubs?
It’s going to be the ultimate act of self sabotage if the owners somehow miss out on at least the Play Offs from here. Imagine adding three players of the calibre of Patrick Bauer, Josh Cullen and Lyle Taylor to this squad, and the difference it would make. Under the buffoon Methven, we could be about to witness the ultimate football example of Pound wise, penny foolish.,
We have got an interesting 24 hours coming up now, in terms of seeing what the real ambitions of the investors are. I’ve been chatting to a couple of our fans away from here tonight, and they both think like most of us that the investors are just playing at it, and lack any real ambition. When you look at the table, Birmingham & Wrexham are going to need to fall to pieces not to go up from here, and given that Huddersfield have spent big money which you’d expect to translate into results, and Wycombe & Stockport are showing consistency, there’s probably around 6 clubs including Bolton & Barnsley going for what could be one play off spot. Signing an inexperienced kid on loan tomorrow in such circumstances will be seen for what it is.
Squeaking into the play-offs this season is going to represent measurable progress from last season. But then last season was an utter embarrassment all round. And 6th place with the squad we have is not going to equate to a ticket to Wembley. The most likely outcome will be painful elimination in the semi-Finals. The question will then be - does that finish to our season, and going again in League One in 2025-26, lead to any more investment next season than CAFC has seen this season? There's one for the Pseuds to endlessly debate over the Summer While the rest of us look on at the preparations Birmingham, Wrexham and Wycombe (or Huddersfield or Stockport) make for their Championship campaigns. And the SMT goes to work trying to scrape the well-scraped barrel for more season ticket sales.
They'll trot out the usual b*******, but it is glaringly obvious they are wanting to do things on the cheap. Every f****** January window there is more activity in a cemetery.
‘And 6th place with the squad we have is not going to equate to a ticket to Wembley. The most likely outcome will be painful elimination in the semi-Finals.’ We have shown we can beat the likes Of Birmingham, Bolton twice, Wycombe etc. Plus we have shown we can lose to anybody. If we finish 6th it then becomes a bit of a lottery. But who knows in Football. Personally I don’t think we will finish in the top six. I think we will finish 8th or 9th.
I agree with that, but if the investors do intend to get a promotion and then consider offers, they will never get a better chance than now. We should be finishing well above the likes of Stockport & Orient, that’s just basic ambition. Now is the time for them to add a couple of proven quality attacking additions.
We've beaten Birmingham and Wycombe, when there was nothing at stake except a few points. Beating one of them when promotion is at stake is a different challenge altogether.
Louis Mendez asked Nathan Jones after the match yesterday whether we were making any signings, and NJ was very clear that he only wanted additions who were proven quality. The 25 games in 5 seasons kid in loan , I can’t remember his name, will be an insult to (most) fan’s intelligence. We could have signed him on 1 Jan. Nor will most be fooled by the “he’s full of potential …a very exciting prospect” etc. Scott & Co said exactly the same about Fiorini, Tedic & Lua Lua.
