It’s the same up here, rental, rates all push people away. I’m supposed to be opening a food place, I’m a small business and think I’ve paid 3k in fees to the council just for approval, it’s insane. then there’s a millionaire Italian guy, has the only food place on the Esplanade where I live, which is prime location. The customer service is appalling, the food is rotten (it’s a take away only cafe type place), however, he does incredible homemade Italian ice cream, it’s like £1 for a teaspoon no joke. He’s right in with the council, someone wanted to open a food van a mile away on the same stretch and he got that thrown out, he takes every single grant going and imo therefore stifling new business, he’s not doing anything illegal, but he doesn’t need it and it’s ****-ish behaviour.
Yep. not good when I was last there. No doubt even worse now. Was recently watching a holiday vloger covering Lisbon as I was thinking of going. Bloke in 30's with his partner. Same. Beggars & homeless all over. Graffiti everywhere. Lost count of the times he was approached to buy drugs. Made several u-turns because it looked too unsafe to go further. European cities have changed beyond belief (not just here).

Oh, right. Was thinking of Lisbon for my next trip. Thanks for the heads up. Done a lot of Scandinavia and the Baltics recently and they're largely unspoilt, but I need somewhere different now.
