Frank Lampard may be used as a shock makeweight in a deal to lure Spurs star Luka Modric to Chelsea.

The Blues are refusing to give up on Modric and will make a renewed bid when the transfer window *reopens next month.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp would see Lampard as a direct replacement for Modric and that could swing the deal. Lampard missed a penalty and was hauled off after 60 minutes in yesterday’s 3-0 win at Newcastle.

Chelsea made three bids for the Croatian in the summer — which were rejected by Tottenham — who insisted Modric wasn’t for sale at any price. And boss Andre Villas-Boas is also prepared to use Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka as bait.

Although Modric stopped short of handing a transfer request in during the *summer he made his *feelings clear, pleading with Tottenham to allow him to move across *London.

There has been *suggestions that Modric would be offered a new deal at Tottenham but in the current climate he is unlikely to sign anything as Chelsea renew their *interest

I know these stories are always around in the silly season but this takes the biscuit.<laugh>

There are so many things wrong with this story that I'm not sure where to start.

    What a load of rubbish.

Lampard is too old, not good enough anymore and his wages are well out of our range.

    Plus Modric isn't for sale.

Oh dear <doh>, more top notch journalism as January nears by. Modric is a Ferrari and Fat Frank is a SORN off Kia. Change the effing record, its becoming insulting now with the way things are panning out this season

Errm...how would he see him as a direct replacement for Modric, exactly? They're not the same type of player.

You can see Andrea Pirlo as a direct replacement for Modric, but Milan aren't tapping him up. You can see Milan Badelj as a direct replacement for Modric, but Dinamo Zagreb can't afford him.

Lampard is 33 and has at best 2 seasons left.
Modric is 26 and has yet to reach his peak.

I wonder how it must feel to be Frank Lampard right now, knowing that there are rumours that he, one of Chelsea's most faithful servants, is going to be used as bait to try and sign another player.

I wouldn't swap Modric for the whole Chelsea squad.

  11. Just logged-on guys, and this is the first story to jump out at me.

    At first, I thought <doh>

    But now, I'm thinking <laugh>

This is utter desperation from the Chelsea-supporting hack-journos.

First off, Harry will have seen just how bad Fat Frank has been this season, and that he can no longer cut it at the top level, and that would have been equalled by his observation and confirmation of just how important Modric is to us. He will see that whereas Frank's star has faded, Moddy's is still rising.

Second off, we don't need an aging and less effective version of VdV.

Third off, Levy told these hacks that Moddy will not leave Spurs AT ANY PRICE. What part of that have they failed to grasp?

Finally, even Moddy must see that he made the right choice to stick with the Mighty Spurs. Chelsea are in disarray, with a team of old codgers and a £50 million flop, and a manager who is hopelessly out of his depth in the EPL.

There are so many other reasons to explain why this story smacks of hack-journo desperation, but I simply cannot be arsed wasting any more of my time on it.

£50mm! Even Henry Moore's statues don't sell for that! And they're a lot more useful. <laugh>

If Chelsea have a couple of setbacks in December (not that unlikely) and the teams around them do well, what happens if Roman collects together all the money from down the back of the sofa and offers, say, 75 mill? Or 50 plus Sturridge? Agreed it is unlikely, (it's also unlikely they will underestimate how much we value Modric if they really want him this time) but this is new territory for them and rationality doesn't seem to be the Russian's strong suit. That sort of money must be tempting?

As for Fat Frank being a direct replacement it's a bit like

I suppose we could propose Lampard and Mata to us and they could have Jenas and Modric in return.......still wouldn't do it though
