The Times saying Danny Rohl is one of the main candidates, too. Interestingly, that piece is written by Paul Hirst. Paul is an Owls fan and used to cover the two Sheffield clubs too, so he will be very well-connected and someone to watch out for if reports about Rohl continue
His last couple of roles haven’t been great tbh. Obviously has huge pedigree though. I just wonder if his time has been and gone.
Hmm, not sure. Hasn't done a good job since 2016-2018 with Newcastle - nothing above a 31% win record since then Was brought into Celta Vigo and after a full pre-season he ended up getting sacked in March because they were going down to the second division. Before that he was at Everton where he was up against it, but didn't do much I kind of put him in the Mourinho category of 'used to be good'
Reading some of the comments and I thnk this is going to be a very interesting appointment and actually a no pressure role for any new manager. Barring a miracle we are down, so anyone who keeps us up is going to be lauded within the football world, not just Southampton, presumably there might be some new signings that might make the team better and lose some of the deadwood (you never know) and if they get the team digging out some results, keeping a tight and difficult to score past defence - having a bit of attacking intent with some efforts on goal, well even that is a win for a new appointment. As long as they don't go tip-tappy around our own penalty area and have are no shots on goal, there is hardly any risk in taking on the job.
Ah maybe you're correct, I thought I read it was the coming summer. Hope is is next year, can't stand him.
I’m hearing one of those foreign managers wer’re interested in is Spaniard Juan Nilldowne The board think he’d suit our style of play
Whilst I agree with the decision to sack Martin (but done way too late), I am struggling to find much enthusiasm over who we might replace him with. As I've alluded to before, if we appoint anyone permanently now, I really struggle to see them still being here in 12 months time. If it means going down the caretaker/interim route for a few months, then that is fine with me. But appointing a manager now with the intention of them overseeing a promotion challenge next season...I can't see it. Having someone like Rohl in charge for next season, that would excite me.
And I've always expected it to be the case. Because except for the occasional mid-table side who are going nowhere, I would suggest it's very rare to have a caretaker or interim manager put in charge for a lengthy period of time. Waiting until March, April or May to make the permanent appointment always seemed like a huge longshot. Hence my concerns.
The real stupid thing is it is very clear that there have always been decent and viable alternatives to Martin so waiting until now to sack him is just madness.
Absolutely. But it doesn't guarantee that's how it will turn out. He'd still have a poor squad to work with. He'd still (almost certainly) be overseeing our relegation. Sure, things might pick up - more points collected, fewer stupid mistakes etc - but 21 or 22 league games is still a very long period of time. Very easy to lose the fans during that time.
