She was Bengali. She'd had boyfriends before, but they had to be chaperoned if they went anywhere. Certainly not boyfriends in the western sense. But her family were not unusual amongst her community.

The only Pakistani girl I know who has been mistreated in this way was a girl who met a white lad and had a kid with him. She didn't experience any violence, but was ostracised by her mum, who she hadn't seen for about 10 years when I last spoke to her.

In some ways the family is more important amongst Asian people, but it seems that standing in the community trumps all in certain cases.

You get the honour of gutting him/her. That's quite the honour. Up close and personal. Real personal.

I know. Imagine caring more about your family's status than your own daughter's life.

That suprises me in all honesty, unless they were prospective suitors that the family had found

The bengali community doesnt allow boyfriends accompanied or otherwise

Also not speaking to someone isnt necessarily mistreating imo.

This is the Bengali community in Salford Fan. You can't expect it to be exactly the same everywhere.

And you're right, not speaking to someone doesn't necessarily mean mistreating. But they cut off all contact, threatened violence if she wouldn't go away, refused to acknowledge their granddaughter, ignored her in the street. That is no way to treat your daughter

As I acknowledged I could be wrong, but that doesnt make any sense regardless of where they are. Benagali = bengali. The kids often have a different outlook depending where they are but some things are constant. Boyfriends = no no.

As for the daughter thing, in all honesty I understand it. The daughter is the one who 'left' the family. She made a decision to get pregnant knowing from the day she was born what that would entail. It wasnt exactly an uninformed decision. Now like everyone else live with the consequences

Truth is this isnt any different from 'white' or 'nromal' family relations. My in laws have a lad who has spoken to his family for god knows how long, doesnt come to funerals etc although he has been contacted. Has never met my kids etc. Yet they are white from a catholic/protestant/methodist background

And that is kind of my point. It happens, some of it is ****ed up but it doesnt have to focus on culture/religion etc. People do ****ed up things in general. Some cultures have certain ways but even in them the killing is extreme and not 'normal' as suggested.

Even the word Honour is derived from the word 'Izza/ Izzat' which doesnt necessarily mean honour in the way its implied.

No it's not Fan. It would be a 'bit like' killing your daughter for oil. I don't agree with either, but the fact you appear to be defending the honour violence implies you agree with one.

I heard of something called the cast system, depending on the bloodline they are considered higher cast and have a greater respect in the community... Half casts are slightly more accepted than the the dark ones ,i think?

No I dont agree with it at all, its just not specific to certain groups is my argument

As for the dying for oil, IMO its exactly the same as the soldiers are 'honoured'. nothing honourable about it
