Still occasionally chuckle to myself that we’ve managed to find someone even worse than Jones Why can’t we just support a normal club
SR making an announcement without even having to say anything. We will now be known as Russell Martin FC.
How about replacing the stick with him until the next international break, with the next European championships...
Be positive guys; it still might happened but even if it doesn’t look on the bright side & the silver lining Spuds will bring. Their press & offensive play will murder “our” Russball tactics. Postecoglou will be very thankful & congratulate us on our style blah, blah, blah & keeping him in a job after a draw & 2 consecutive defeats in Dec & that might be enough to bring about a massive reaction on the terraces, followed by some action by Banana Republic
Don’t get this “may as well leave until the end of the season” crap. The damage is bad now, imagine another 23 games of this self indulged Bozo being in charge.
The question needs to be asked: would you take Nathan Jones if it was the only option? Or keep Russell? That's the true test of what we think about Russell Martin.
All about the financials for me. Sacking him is apparently going to cost about £14m, which is money that could be used elsewhere when we go down. And I also think whoever we get in if we were to sack now has a slim chance of being the manager next season anyway, which could mean another payout. If the cost doesn’t change between sacking now and closer to the end of the season then I’m up for getting rid sooner, I just can’t shake the feeling that there is too long left for a new manager to survive into next season anyway
If it means we have to stick with the current squad and spend nothing in January to get rid of Bozo and get a new manager in, I know which option I’d be choosing.
It's not too late to salvage the season for me, we are still in two cups and nobody wants to continue to watch us losing in the depressingly same self inflicted way all season. Take the financial hit and sell a player if you have too but get a new man in asap.
If SR actually went for a more accomplished manager rather than trying to be clever twats in finding the next great thing, maybe we wouldn’t have to get rid of manager’s as often. There record is laughable. Replaced Ralph with Nathan Jones, then with a coach they wanted in Selles, then plucked the bang average RM out of nowhere. The money they’ve spent on paying managers contracts is a joke, imagine if they’d used that money on a real manager with pedigree?? Oh, and they ****ed up the appointment of Marsch with their dithering.
I joke about it, but probably not. I would only want Jones in for the entertainment value (of how awful he is), and for the fact there is a tiny (very tiny) bit of guilt in abusing RM due to the fact he did get us here and gave us Wembley. NJ didn't do any of that. Out of the two, there is a better manager in RM, but he just isn't right for us anymore. After a disastrous season like this will turnout to be, he won't get us back up next year.
Is the level or payoff for Martin normal these days among football managers? Especially championship level. Seems extraordinarily high for someone that’s achieved nothing in management until he came here. Actually find it impressive how bad at managing a football club SR are. They just get everything wrong and pivot from one extreme to the other. Like the contract extension for Martin which has presumably added the extra financial difficulty around sacking him. Regardless of whether it was triggered on promotion (it was still them that put that clause in there). Seems like an extreme reaction to getting through Ralph, Jones and Selles in one season. But engage brains for a second. Don’t just do the opposite for the sake of doing the opposite. Most agreed Martin deserved a chance in the PL, but most also felt his style was highly unlikely to work in the PL and his defensive record has been awful across all leagues which was a huge red flag. So why the **** do you extend his contract before finding out if he can adapt to the PL first.
I don't understand this theory that whatever manager we get in is unlikely to be managing us next year in the Championship.
I'm not convinced there's a better manager in Martin tbh. League one promotion and then turned championship strugglers into a top 6 finish in two seasons vs a play off win with a team expecting to be there and who should have been closer to the automatic positions. Could you see Martin taking over Pompey next month, keeping them up, and then having them in the play offs the season after next? I certainly couldn't and that's basically what Jones did.
I'm also 100% certain that Jones would have more than 5 points with this squad after 15 matches. I don't actually think Jones is that terrible. Was just the wrong person at the wrong time imo.
