Well UNIFIL did bugger all to help the situation so it's definitely worth trying something different. And there are no crude oil fields in the immediate vicinity so I'm more relaxed about US involvement.
Maybe it's Iran who wants the peace deal more than anyone, now they know Trump has been elected as the next president, and if they don't seek a deal in these regions now, then they know what comes next when Biden is gone. There's reasons all this is suddenly being rushed through, much like all the weapons being rushed into Ukraine.

There's videos of Syrian military being executed. The speed of the advance seems huge though, gonna escalate further I'm sure.
Yeah I don't really understand what is going on out there, but I get the impression there are outside actors involved, and likely to be again, pretty gruesome what humans do to one another, all for the sake of what, leaving a country completely trashed and uninhabitable.
I'm fairly sure Turkey back the rebels over Assad (but not 100%) and with the provinces involved being just over the border makes you think they must be involved
I caught a vert brief snippet on Radio 4 this morning on my drive to work. Something about Iran and Hezbollah being weakened, which makes me think Sunni sectarian issues are at play in Syria But I don't confess to know enough about it to make a informed comment really.
Turkey and Syria have never liked each other really. Syria have supported the Kurds in the past who Turkey regard as terrorists. There’s about 20 different militias mooching around Syria all with their own agendas. Some fight alongside each other, some just ignore each other and some fight against each other. Complicated ****.
Well Turkey are against the Syrian national army. They’re also against the YPG. Turkey and the YPG have a common enemy in the Syrian national army. The YPG and the Syrian National army are out there fighting against ISIS who the Turks are lenient with and have form for letting them through their borders into Syria. Then there’s all the little off-shoots of the Sunni and Shiate militias who are looking to take land for themselves while clashing whenever they bump into each other as well as other forces depending on whether they’re Sunni or Shiate. Got it?
