I don't see it being that different. City 1st, Utd 2nd, Chelsea 3rd, Arsenal 4th, Spurs 5th, Liverpool 6th, Newcastle 7th. City and Newcastle will be the only clubs to really improve this season. Tho' Spurs could well get 4th and Newcastle 6th if they can avoid the injuries.

City are probably going to be about as far ahead of the rest as Chelsea were in 04/05 and 05/06. But then Chelsea's dominance only lasted two years, as soon as they stopped spending £100 million a year they fell back. I wonder how City will fare in 2013/14 if the FFP rules are fully enforced.

Aye, but Chelsea were the 4th best team in Europe last season. Inter, Milan, Bayern and all the rest were all worse. So regardless of when we met Barca, we were stil better than anyone barring Barca and possibly Real.

Can't really fault this prediction you bastard. <ok>

Although Newcastle are in a crisis at the moment with their so far solid defence falling apart from injuries and Tiote out for a few more games.

You lot always seem to get the 3 points no matter how bad you play. Spurs and Arsenal are a lot better than I anticipated at the early stages of the season. We need to start getting results from the lesser teams, the big clubs don't seem to be the problem for us, in the last 12 months we haven't lost to any of the other top 6 sides bar Spurs. If we get 6th or 5th it will most likely be down to the vast competition amongst the top teams in the league, City may run away with the league but the fight for the CL spots is completely different to what it was 3+ years ago. We would most likely get top 4 had the competition been the same as it was back then.

Aye, I thought a good dose of cold hard FAHKTS would douse SKY's WUM flame ;)

Too early to call it a crisis I think - they've just played City, Utd and Chelsea and any team is likely to struggle there if they have injuries. The true test will be can they pick up three points on a regular basis when playing the lower clubs with a few players out.

Yep, like I said to RHC before, we're not playing well at the moment but I still expect us to pick up the points in most games. We just seem to have the mentality. Whereas Livepool still seem to drop points no matter how well they are doing. Could be you've gotten to the stage Utd were at when SAF first came to the club - back then we had the quality to roll the top teams over but kept dropping points in what should have been routine games and couldn't mount a real title challenge until the club was rebuilt from the ground up.

Spurs and Arsenal have improved, but then all the top clubs have improved from last season. This time last year we had 28 points from 14 games and were 1st. This year that wouldn't been enough for top four at this stage - City are currently on track to finish with over 100 points! So even though Liverpool have improved, teams like Newcastle, Spurs and City have pushed on even more right now. Just goes to show how utterly **** you were this time last year ;)

Nope, it was always with Heskey! Who was actually pretty damn good at the time, for two seasons he was the player he should've been throughout his career, instead of the bumbling centre forward he currently is who plays like Bambi on ice. It's rare, and I know Rooney often plays at the same time, but I wouldn't call Rooney a striker in his current position, which was more my point really. Physically I reckon Welbeck is more suited to the lone striker role, but I don't know if he has the technique or intelligence to play that role ahead of Hernandez. Weird thing is you've got about 3 or 4 strikers that could play well up ahead of Rooney, but none that can perform consistently over a season as strikers like Van Persie, Tevez, Torres (of old), Drogba (of old), Aguero etc do.

Would you actually want Man Utd to buy a top class centre forward, or do you think you'll be fine with 10+ from each of Welbeck, Hernandez, Rooney and possibly Young/Nani/Berbatov.

Teams need to stop having so much respect and fear of Man Utd, get at them and you may get something. The Utd first team is not that great, Fergie is the difference.

I think they have bought well but also think that some of those players may take a couple of seasons to bed in and that the important point for Utd is the proven quality players that they buy next.

I don't know how you can qualify this. If you want to go on where they finished - which I know is a poor marker - then Chelsea were 5th at best (going out in the quarters puts them out of the top 4.) But Inter also got to the quarters...
What rank were Arsenal then? They gave Barca a better game over two legs than you did in the final.
The only way you can say who is the best and where the others are in relation to them is to have a league, where all the teams play each other. You can't just come out and decide with very little evidence like you just have. For example, United were the best PL team last season, but Stoke and Birmingham were better than them in the FA and Legue Cups respectively.

the difference between 1st and 2nd is £100097764376M spent on players, so in reality we are no worst than last season, unlike liverpools £50M+spent on players and playing for 6th spot.

I'd say Rooney at the moment plays in a relatively similar role to Heskey at Liverpool or Bergkamp at Arsenal, tho' obviously being a very different type of player. Not a striker, but certainly a centre forward. And I think that's ideal for someone like Hernandez or Welbeck to play off - Rooney dropping deep creates space so they don't need to be some hulking brute of a lone striker a la Drogba.

I'm much happier with that than if we had a really prolific striker - most of our best teams in recent years have been those where we've had centre forwards / strikers who play well together and bag 15-20 goals a season rather than one striker who scores all the goals. Cantona and Hughes; Cantona and Cole; Yorke and Cole; Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez - we've shared the goals in all of our most successful seasons. Compare that to when we had RVN - he was one of our best ever strikers, bagging 20-30 goals every season he wasn't injured, but we were **** the whole time he was with us. When he didn't score, we didn't score and it was only when Rooney and Ronaldo started sharing the goals that we started playing well again.

Like you say, it's all about the league. Barca, Real, Utd and Chelsea were the top two in Spain and England respectively. The top two in Italy were AC and Inter both of whom were **** in Europe - Inter got owned by Schalke who you've already admitted were worse than Chelsea. The top two in Germany were Dortmund and Leverkusen, also **** in Europe. Arsenal did well against Barca at home, albeit with some aid from the linesmen, but then Barca's European away form is generally pretty poor. And the Arse were dicked far worse than us at the Nou Camp - not a single shot on target IIRC.

But even working through that logic, who's to say Inter, for example, wouldn't have beaten United? They were the epitome of inconsistency last year, as shown by beating Bayern and then losing to Schalke. Or playing a belting first half against Spurs to lead 4-0, only to finish up 4-3. So they may have battered you, or got hammered.
I could make similar arguments for some of the other sides too.
You simply can't say 100% either way unless you all played each other.
