Does anyone have a link to the McCarthy comment? I need to read that in context. He just has to go in my opinion, the whole “it’s too late” argument is bollocks to me, especially when you havent even hit the new year, that is some A-grade pessimism right there. I would absolutely hate to have David Moyes on any kind of long term deal but I believe wholeheartedly he’d at least get us in a position that didn’t make us look utter toilet every single week and playing suicidal football at the back. I could see him organising this team juuuust enough to squeeze out performances from certain players while playing a beat more of a cohesive and safe brand of football. This idea that it’s Russ or bust is insane to me. Imagine your two choices are a definite kick in the bollocks or a 50/50 between a kick in the bollocks and a Thai massage but your thinking is well it’s very likely I’m going to get kicked in the bollocks anyway, so I’m just going to take the definite kick in the bollocks. It’s all very clearly going one way with Russ. I wouldn’t even just argue we’re no better than the start of the season. To me we are no better now than we were with him mid-run in the Championship, all the same blatant problems we had there we still have here, it’s just that the opposition is worse. It’s not like his style has become stale, there just isn’t really a style at all. The best manager under SR has still been the first one they sacked, their hiring has been dogshit. I will never forgive them for hiring Ruben ****ing Selles because of one alright game. So while I think he absolutely should go, I do acknowledge their hiring skills have left a lot to be desired.
Sorry mate but no. He can't see out the season and carry on the way we are especially now he's started to have a pop at the fans. Time for us to force the club's hand.
He’s deluded. I think he’s more annoying than Nathan Jones getting irritated every week by the press.
And by the fans. I would rather see us defend for 3 1/2 minutes from the opposing teams half (and not concede), than pass them the ball in our own area.
And that's the point. We didn't concede during those three and a half minutes. There are periods where you're going to have to dig in and defend, in any league, but especially in the PL when you're one of the worst sides. Continuing to overplay in our own area and thinking we won't give up goals is simply extreme arrogance.
So he’s saying it’s better to give away cheap goals and spend less time defending, than spend 3.5 minutes defending and potentially get something from the game. ****er.
I think the problem is that if you are defending you don't have possession and that is all that really matters. If you concede from giving the ball away near your goal, you're not out of possession for very long and then you have kick off again which means you have possession of the ball again.
There's also the need to slow the game down at times. Take Liverpool's first goal. Why was McCarthy so keen to get play going again? Answer: the manager. We had been under the pump for 10 minutes or so at that stage. Take your ****ing time. Reset. Go long if needed. Give the defence a breather. But oh no. Russell "I know better than anyone else" Martin demands we get the ball moving ASAP.
Just listened to the BBC interview. He really doesn't like criticism does he? I swear he is no different to NJ, he just has a posher accent. Up until now I wasn't too fussed about binning him as SR will just replace him with another ****e pick but after that we should just **** him off. I'm not prepared to have him in charge for next season in the Champ. He's a tool.
This low percentage playing from the back football under Russell is not going to improve, we have been playing it for nearly a season and a third with almost the same defence and we are still coughing up self inflicted goals far too regularly. There are positives to go forward with if we get a new manager in as long as we can keep Tyler and Fernandes giving them the chance to continue their direct forward running. I still think Russell is a decent bloke with good people skills but he is a little defensive and misguided with his possession at all cost philosophy with this squad.
He’s crossed a line now. Managers can get away with a lot in terms of criticising others, whether it’s the other team, the referee, the weather, whatever. But you never, ever, criticise your own fans, that is a slippery slope which only ends one way. Add in the completely asinine comments about the tactics and what he expects the players to do, and you wonder whether this team would do better without a manager at all. Our goal, as others have said, was contrived completely contrary to RM’s tactics. A long ball down the wing, a cross to a runner on the opposite wing, a quick ball to feet in the area and a first time shot. It’s easy, it’s beautiful, it’s how football should be played, and I bet my pension that Russell Martin didn’t coach that.
Forgive me for intruding on this debate as an outsider but I sense that the club from top to bottom, including the fans, has not prepared itself for PL.football apart from taking the windfall and parachute payments in readiness for another shot at promotion next season. S
Makes me laugh that he feels he even remotely has the right after delivering the clubs worst start to a season in its entire history. At almost any other club he would be getting chased out of the car park Everton style by this point, he has such a charmed and cushy life here it is unreal, yet he appears to think he is hard done by because fans cheer when a player does something actually sensible.
I hope that sarcastically applauding the fans and having a go in the post match interview will finally turn the fans against him vocally. Friday night on Sky seems a good place to start.
100%. I'm actually glad he did it as I think this will push many people over the edge. I'm gonna be on it as soon as I'm in the concourse and from the first minute of the match. Actually buzzing for Friday tbh. I feel like apathy has turned into anger which brings energy. And it being a Friday night game I'm hoping it'll be a great atmosphere even away from Martin stuff.
Thing is you can get away with criticising the fan base if you're someone like Fergie who's delivered a **** load of success. But ten losses from twelve and bottom of the league? **** off mush.
This. Fans have every right to scrutinise and criticise after 10 losses out of 12. It's completely unforgivable to do what he did yesterday.
