How can you say that's an easy chance?

It’s definitely not an easy chance but I do believe it’s a poor finish. Didn’t realise at the time how good of a chance it was, though.

Well I'm lost now tbh, I don't really understand how it can be a difficult chance but an awful finish.

To be fair, you were there so I appreciate it may hurt you more than me ...

    ... although, like that shot, it's f*cking close <laugh>

I think the keeper coming out and the defender being alongside Aleksic limits his options of where to aim for in the goal

I didnt think Neil was at his best personally, but I do agree he carried the midfield. I said before I feared it would become a 1 man midfield for us and as time went on that was the case.

Been thinking about our style of play, and in particular how we seem to sit deep when ahead in games. Second halves in particular we seem a bit too willing to concede possession and territory.

It goes back a while I think. It isnt new to the new coach. Although I wonder if it is more deliberate under him. I cant remember if it were under Beale or Dodds but we started to develop the habit of dropping deeper and deeper. I remember after 1 game Roberts was interviewed and was aksed about it. He said it absolutely wasnt the coaches instruction to do so. Last season I think confidence was really low in the squad due to the daft decisions re mgrs. I didnt really pay too much attention to the sitting back stuff. Now is different though. We are pushing hard for promotion, so why is it a continuing trend.

I read that it was how Regis played at LOrient. It certainly looks a very deliberate tactic to me. Regis talks about wanting score goals really quickly, with as few touches as possible. Counter attacking can be a really effective style, but I dont think it is a sustainable one personally. It is mentally demanding for players to be out of possession for so long in games, as well as physically demanding. I suspect there is a correlation between our lack of control in games and conceding late. We looked shattered yesterday with about 15 minutes left I thought.

I think we have the players who can keep possession. We have good players at the back with ball at feet. Neil is the perfect player for a high possession side. Rigg, Jobe and Roberts can all hold onto the ball, Connelly too. We have players to play counter attacking also with the pace of Mundle and Isidor, and Jobes running power. So I wonder why we dont make more use of a possession based style and mix it up a bit. I thought by giving up territory we simply invited Millwall on yesterday. Had we started the second half 10 yards higher and played keep ball Millwall would have had less encouragement.

Of course in this division teams are always going to have a go when behind. It is inevitible. But at 1-0 Millwall werent about to throw the kitchen sink all second half. We seem to be willing to let them though, and want to hit them on the counter. It almost worked yesterday of course, but ultimately not.

It is a bit daft to be critical of the style when we are sitting top. I think we could be a bit more determined to control games better though. Whether that be through possession or territory. I really like Regis so far, I think he is getting so much right, and he is learning. I personally hope we see a variation soon in terms of game style when ahead. It could be that January becomes a critical month for us in terms of new recruits too. There are clearly players here who wont play, so we could do with a couple who can play how Regis wants.

It’s not as simple as just pushing 10 yards higher though they went 442 and played direct.

the play style isn’t for everyone I quite like it but appreciate your points

Never said it was simple mate. It rarely is. But pushing the lines higher gives us options to keep the ball better, and makes it much harder for them to play direct.

I do understand the idea of letting them have it and sitting in. We had 4 out and out defenders in there yesterday who will head it away all day long. But you do need to find a way to give them a breather, or it does become very difficult mentally to keep doing it.

Jobe is that breather. Reason it was much harder is because we had Rigg and neil to try be physical and hold the ball for us they just can’t do it. We’ll notice a different this week with Jobe I’m 100% sure

Hume straight back in at RB with Ballard dropping out? Don’t think there’s a chance O’Nien gets dropped
