I would suggest it’s the leadership and experience from Duffy and not to mention being right footed, especially at the moment that’s keeping JHT from naming an incredibly young defence of Fisher Doyle Cordoba and Chrisene
In what way does it mean we "lose the huge initial impact of Doyle", 1950? On the contrary, his aptitude for the inverted FB role enhances his impact in possession, not only by utilising his passing skills in a more advanced position, but also by freeing two of the midfield trio to get forward in support of the front line. Received opinion is that that is why we wanted him, and his playing that role is why Man City agreed to let us have him. So far this season, playing at LB, Doyle has 1 goal (open play) and 4 assists; playing at CB, he has just 1 assist. That suggests to me that his impact has been much as Thorup and Knapper hoped it would be.
I obviously wasn't paying enough attention as I was under the impression that in the first few games, where he got rave reviews, he was a central defensive/box to box midfielder. Obviously I was wrong.
You weren't wrong 1950. It was several weeks into the season before Cordoba was match fit, and Doyle played LCB in four of the five league matches prior to the Watford game, which was Cordoba's first start. First game of the season (v Oxford), Doyle was at LB, with Hanley & Duffy at CB. Doyle has been consistently praised irrespective of position played. But it's pretty clear he was brought in for that inverted FB role, and started at CB only because Cordoba wasn't ready. Watford was the first opportunity for him to show what he could do in that inverted role, and he excelled in that game with a goal and an assist (WhoScored MOM with a rating of 8.8).
I noticed that Hanley only lasted the first half in the last match for Scotland. Was he injured again?
A 1-2 win away against Poland is a great result for them and for Scotland. Good that both get some valuable match fitness as well.
From the official England U21 team report of the match v the Netherlands: "Subs not used: 13 Matthew Cox (Brentford) 12 Kellen FIsher (Norwich City) 15 Ben Chrisene (Norwich City)" Against Spain, the official report shows Chrisene was a 90th minute substitute, while Fisher was an unused Sub. So yes, they were both in both match squads, but involvement was minimal.
