A lot of news about how changes to Inheritance Tax will ruin some ordinary farmers. Here’s another viewpoint … “Half a million people die every year. Under the reforms to inheritance tax relief on agricultural land proposed in the budget, about 500 individuals who inherit land worth more than £2m (£3m if they were married to the deceased) will join the rest of society and have inheritance tax levied on their bequest – albeit at half the rate, with an enlarged exemption and 10 years to pay it, concessions not made to the rest of us. How fortunate and privileged are they? There is no acknowledgment of the potential wider benefits that go beyond the non-trivial contribution the tax will make to relieving the crisis in public services. The hoarding of land that has gone on since the bung was introduced by Margaret Thatcher in 1984, which has so steadily driven up land prices and farmers’ rents, will at last be checked as some of the larger estates are obliged to sell parcels of land to pay inheritance tax, as they did before 1984 without the world falling in, rather than be enabled to own it in perpetuity. Young farmers, now increasingly crowded out of the market, will get a chance to buy land: there is the prospect of a levelling off, even a fall, in farm rents. New life and ideas will be brought to the rural economy as innovative, energetic farmers enter the market – and production even increases.”

Opened the tread today and was surprised to there was find a difference of opinion so thought it would be a good idea to verify the numbers. "Is it 500 farms a year?" from https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8rlk0d2vk2o "Paul Johnson, the director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), an independent economy think-tank, told Sky News: "The changes will affect a remarkably small number of some of the most valuable farms." He added: "[Farms are] still more generously treated, actually, than farms used to be in decades past." The Treasury estimates that 500 estates including agricultural land will be affected by the agricultural property relief reform per year. Dan Neidle, an independent tax expert, says the number of actual farms affected is likely to be below 500 per year. There were a total of 462 inherited farms valued above £1m in 2021-22, according to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC): 345 valued between £1m and £2.5m 80 at £2.5m to £5m 37 above £5m Under the new rules, those 462 farms would be affected by the 20% inheritance tax on any value above £1m (not on the whole value). However, as Mr Neidle points out, like for the rest of the population, there is no inheritance tax to be paid on the value of property up to £325,000, bringing the untaxed total to £1.325m. If a farmer is married, his or her spouse would be able to pass on another £1.325m tax free, taking the total untaxed amount to £2.65m. There were 117 farms valued above £2.5m in 2021-22, according to the HMRC figures. In addition, there is an £175,000 tax-free allowance on a main residence when it's being passed on to children or grandchildren. This brings the total untaxed amount for a farming couple to up to £3m. Steve Reed, the secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs, confirmed the "vast majority" of farmers will not be affected by changes. I believe that the mantra is that “Lefty Labour” will always be soft on immigration and asylum seekers. It seems that they are harder on it than the Tories. The last paragraph mentions the arrest of a man suspected of supplying traffickers with boats/boat engines. The UK National Crime Agency was part of this, with the Dutch and Belgian police. It has always made sense to me to go after the traffickers. Now maybe we will see some actual results in reducing the boats. The Tory approach was always to slow down the asylum seeking process so that they could weaponise it and get the truly low IQ and racist people to support their Rwanda scheme. TWO more record-breaking deportation flights have taken off since the election, removing hundreds who entered the country illegally. Labour can now boast to have organised the three biggest returns flights in UK history. In August, the first took off with 220 aboard and two more with a total of 409 passengers followed to unnamed countries. It is understood more are planned before the end of the year. In total, more than 25 returns flights have touched down in countries including Albania, Poland, Romania, Ghana, Nigeria and Vietnam since July 5. To date, Labour have sent 9,400 peoplewith no legal right to be in the UK back to their home countries, with nearly 2,600 forced deportations. That is an increase of 19% compared to 2023 under the Tories. There has also been a 14% increase in foreign national offenders being returned since Labour took over. A Labour source described the system as an “utter disaster” when Keir Starmer became PM, adding: “Tories wasted £700million on a Rwanda scheme that didn’t stop a single boat or deport a single asylum seeker.” Last week, a Turkish man suspected of supplying hundreds of boat motors to smugglers was arrested in Amsterdam. So far this year, 33,000 migrants crossed the Channel in small boats, compared to 29,437 for the whole of 2023 and 45,755 in 2022.

More manifesto promises being kept and a working policy of removals in place, that, together with a streamlined application procedure plus working with European authorities to arrest the smugglers, will see a real improvement. Rwfuckinganda what a load of bollocks that was.
Back to a disjointed thread for me. Can't abide the extreme crap spouted on here, so have to resort to this. It is not a case of not wanting to listen or being stupid, actually rather the opposite. So O's, any responses to me are like your life, in an echo chamber where no one is listening.
