Same. Remember the next season going to a reset game v Blackburn I think. Speedie was playing for them. I kept following him up and down the pitch shouting “Speedie… You’re a ****er” could we he was boiling. Eventually snapped and shouted “shut the **** up you little scum bag”. I didn’t shut up!!

 

For that you have my undying admiration!!

 

Fullwell end for me that night

 

I was in the Fulwell that night.

 

There were 60,000 in the Clock Stand that night apparently. All of them near the front getting digs in on Speedie

 

Ah at least you know them all too. Thought they were just people I knew…

 

One of my faves!
Will never forget the Speedie moment, especially as I was literally a few feet away from it in The Paddock.

Just goes to show you can’t always believe what’s in the internet. It doesn’t say that this game was the highest attendance at RP. I thought it was. In fact I remember walking to the ground that night, the roads around RP were jam packed. Couldn’t move there were that many.

 

Hes up there with Micky Gray, in my eyes and ears, these honours lists are a poor yardstick imo.

 

I was in the Newcastle Breweries executive box, Main Stand. Tbh, from there it was hard to see what happened, just that there was a scuffle, then both sent off.
It was only later when I seen the highlights I realised what had happened, and just thought "gan on there Benno".
Iirc, we gave Gary Owers a lift to and from the match.

 

You must have been standing near me

 

We had almost that many for an average attendance at Roker Park in the 50's, and almost the same number again (46k plus average) at SOL under Reidy twice.

Bumped into Benno at Penshaw Farm Shop a couple of weeks ago. My missus was like a school girl...told him she loves him. I reminded her that she's told Benno that she loves him more times than she's told me in the last 20 years
